FSMs - please read

Admins, I'm posting this here and to the FSM sticky in the Maintenance Forum since I think the multi-placed announcement is warranted.

--------------------

Folks, a bit of a bummer, but they just posted a notice on the NICOclub website that reads:

"In March 2018, Nissan North America (NNA) served notice upon NICOclub that the documents contained herein infringe upon the intellectual property rights of Nissan and demanded we immediately disable access to the contents of Nissan Service Manuals and Infiniti Service Manuals"

LINK:
http://nicoclub.com/nissan-service-manuals

If your FSM is still available, I recommend you download it NOW, before it goes away; there's a strong chance that it will no longer be available soon.

As of today, the, the 350Z FSMs are still available at the last link I posted in the FSM sticky:
http://nicoclub.com/archives/nissan-...e-manuals.html

Since Nissan is now asserting its copyright on the FSMs, in order to get a "legal" copy, you'll need to buy it directly from the manufacturer here:
https://www.nissan-techinfo.com/

A 24-hour "purchase subscription" will cost $20 and will allow you to download as many FSMs and TSBs as your bandwidth will allow. If you're slow like me, a 30-day subscription is $75.

Thanks soo much for the alert, I just downloaded everything here for my 04' @ http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/350Z/coupe/

Once again, much appreciated!

I hate this. What does this hurt to the company?

Why do they need to submit a action against nico for service manuals. This is a bummer Nissan decided to peruse this.

MicVelo 04-09-2018 10:15 PM

If one doesn't take action to protect their intellectual property - like trademarks - it ceases to be such. Simple as that.

Doesn't answer the question of why, after 10 years since the last model was made, did they suddenly decide to do that is beyond me. I would guess that another (or more) "interested third parties" may have alerted the mfgrs that they are not protecting themselves.

Said parties that make money on such data and who shall remain unnamed.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. It was only a matter of time really.. Thanks, Zak.

dboyzalter 04-10-2018 05:51 AM

I could never use that anyways... If its not a hard copy im lost.

iideadeyeii 04-10-2018 05:53 AM

Is there a way to download them all at once or do I need to download 50 files?

Takes all of one minute to download all the files for a particular year/model. (Assuming you have decent speed, that is. Each file is less then an MB or so.) I downloaded the entire catalog of FSMs when I first got my Z, just to make sure I had 'em in case of today's events. (And in case I ever owned one of each year.... :icon17:)

Along these lines, Volvo steps up to do something similar:

Well same here... But when it’s 10 years old why bother at this point is what I’m saying.

According to the mods at NICOclub, a lot of Nissan/Infiniti techs have told NICO over the years that they go to their website instead of dealing with the hassle of getting the FSMs from Nissan Corporate. I'm guessing that Nissan might be having some liability concerns over bad or outdated info floating around out there if that's the case:

"Beginning in 2002, the owner of NICOclub began purchasing these documents from Nissan annually, as a reference to assist with countless technical questions posed by NICOclub’s readers. To date, this has been common knowledge among our contacts at NNA, both staff and management.

Because of the ease of access, the majority of Nissan employees that needed access to FSMs utilized the system here, rather than the cumbersome internal system at NNA.

As an independent entity, and the web’s largest supporter of Nissan and Infiniti owners, NICOclub has always placed the needs of enthusiasts above brand loyalty.

While NICOclub has never charged readers for access to these resources, intellectual property allegations are not taken lightly. We realize this may hinder your efforts to research issues with your vehicle. We simply do not have the resources to dispute Nissan’s directive."

Someone should print it all out and give copies to their favorite members in here...

Would be best in book form, maybe staples could help.

I got the manual from my 04 rsx still. It really was a great tool.

Tree killer.

C'mon Mike, join the 21st century!! Hahahahahaha.....

And that said by the guy who prints out dinner reservations and travel documents even though they're all on my phone. (Don't trust web connections everywhere....)

HOMiEZ 04-10-2018 03:23 PM

That makes sense, of coarse.

I just looked at that link. Pretty funny, actually.

Since the creator is located here in the US, Volvo's case is lost at prima facie since the Southern California chapter of the Volvo Club of America's use of the prancing moose as a statement between Volvo and Ferrari is protected free speech under the First Amendment of the US Constitution based on SCOTUS' "parody" decision in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., 510 U.S. 569 (1994), where such an image and/or product would be considered 'fair use.'

I suppose it'd ruin the site creator's relationship with Volvo to sue or seek a federal injunction on these trademark/copyright infringement threats, but it seems that since the relationship is already ruined, the whole thing is moot anyway. In fact, Volvo could be held liable for future lost earnings and damages if this goes to a US court, wherein the jurisdiction lies.

Sometimes corporate lawyers think they can act above the law and this seems to be a casebook example of such a situation.

Wasn't sure if I'd use them, but downloaded all the ones for my EX35, and for an 07 350z as I'm expecting to pick one up Saturday. Thanks for posting! I purchased LED interior lights for my EX, but hadn't installed them yet because I didn't want to break any clips. I went through the PDF and while somewhat confusing, I think it'll be a great help.
