Aloha guys- I tend to have “unusual” problems and my 350z is no different. I need to fix the passenger side curtain airbag. Here’s the unusual part : it appears to never have deployed but the box it sits in has opened up. As you can see from the picture it’s still folded up. Of course this problem triggers the airbag warning light which stays on and can’t be reset using the techniqueshttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....9a5260574.jpegThe previous owner felt duct tape solved everything
discussed here on the forum. So my question is: should I bother unplugging the battery and messing with it, trying to repack it etc or is it not worth the effort and I should just take it to the dealer? Airbags are something I’m not used to dealing with and I’m not comfortable working on them - thus this query. If it’s likely a 10 minute fix I’m on it- otherwise just get it done by the dealership. If your air bag light is on steady, the system thinks an air bag has been deployed. The previous owner could have folded the deployed air bag back into its pocket. I can't think of any other reason why the pocket is open. You probably need to see your dealer about this one.

I would just find a used seat and replace the whole thing. I understand this will be more difficult living on Kauai, but you can find good prices from Nissan specific dismantlers in the lower 48 and get it shipped. The SRS/airbag light may not go out on it's own even with a replaced (good) airbag. A dealer level scan tool might be required to clear that.

My advice is a bit different: take your Z to a dealer FIRST. If the airbag hasn't been deployed, and is somehow defective, Nissan will replace it and repair the damage under the SRS warranty. Unless you bought the car with pre-existing damage, this is the most cost-effective way to repair this system.

If the cars air bag went off on the passenger side the seat belt might also need to be replaced if they dont retract.

Thanks for all the good information guys. I’ll try the dealer next. There’s no evidence anywhere on the car or carfax that this car has ever been in an accident- so I’m not thinking the airbag actually deployed. And it’s folded up pretty tidy as well- looks more like the plastic box cracked open. I’ll see what the dealer says and ask if that might be covered somehow by nissan. My Nissan dealer is really cool...so we’ll see.

Shipping a seat here isn’t really an option - that would be around ~$400 in shipping costs alone...

I can always just cover the light with some black duct tape like the previous owner did to get it passed on the safety check. Or buss out a soldering iron ;-) Again thanks and I’ll keep you posted.

If that's the case, just wire in the resistor, no need to solder it, the wire taps will work just fine. The plug/harness is easily accessible under the seat.

Bring on the duct tape!

Of course, only go this route after you talk with the dealer. I've worked with some "nice" Nissan dealers in the past, but me thinks they won't be able to help you this time around, I don't know, maybe I'm cynical.
