I think it's a production thing and such a small liability for Nissan that it doesn't make financial sense to separate them. If they were a bigger warranty item and more people had issues with them over the course of the OEM warranty than I think you'd see replacements. In all reality how many times per the lifespan of the vehicle are headlights replaced?

True. Like the way I see it, my e46 you can buy aftermarket lenses for like $30 for replacement.

My big thing is im trying to rebuild the headlights and do some halo and sequential turn signal retrofitting and it would be kind of purposeless to throw a bunch of money rebuilding them, and then throw disgusting lenses back on them.

I was in the same situation when I did my headlight retro. I bought some cheapo aftermarket replacements off of fleabay to just source the lenses. They were slightly cheaper at $136, but it looks like they're out of stock now.

I'm sure you probably know this, but all of the lenses fit all years - it's just the internals that are different so you can get the cheapest halogen 03-05 if you only want to use the lenses.

Try a wet sand with high grade sandpaper (1500+ grit) and then plastic polish and headlight sealer kit. It should clear up after those steps.

One of the long term fixes with our headlights to stop hazing is to sand them down. You should give it a shot with this if you're going to replace them anyway. Start at maybe 800 or 1000 then work your way finer until you're polishing them. Sandpaper is cheap at home depot etc.

I have, but not on my Z yet. I did this on a late 90s Honda and the OEM headlights looked brand new afterwards. Ceramic coating also prevented them from fogging up again, haven't had to touch up the headlights yet and its been almost 3 years.

My Z lenses were pretty bad on the inside, condensation got in them since the previous owner for some reason cut the headlight wiring harness and took out the seals/bulbs... So I baked them apart in the oven, polished them on the inside and re-sealed them. I do plan on ceramic coating them at some time, thanks for the reminder :hehehe:

Sorry to reply late to the OP's original question, but I've been out of touch. By federal regulation, headlamp assemblies like ours are required to be built with a "bonded lens and reflector assembly." See FMVSS 108 for the details.
