Cruise Control's SET light flashing quickly
 

Just started happening.

Cruise along, turn cruise on, set the speed , then have to brake for a stop light. Proceed to drive then notice the SET light flashing quickly.

I ran a scanner and it came up with one engine code for P1564 (ASCD SW), which seems to be the cruise control switch. The freeze frame for the code had the RPM at slightly less than 900 rpm, so must have been at a stop light.

The two little hard rubber plugs on the Clutch Pedal and Brake Pedal are still good and not broken. In the past when those went bad the SET light would simple not come on. So don't think that is it

Do you all think it is the actual cruise control switch? Not a hard thing to replace, and since the letters are coming off, might be worth a try replacing it.

I read somewhere that the frequency of the flashing can indicate what the issue is. The poster didn't recall if the quick flash was the TPS or the switch.

Thoughts?

Thankfully, it doesn't look like there are too many components to the ASCD system. Since you're getting P1564, I would start with the switch.

I didn't think about looking in the FSM for 1564.

It definitely sounds like the switch is going bad....yikes the discontinued item is pricey

Usually it's the clock spring. The Cruise Switch assembly plugs into the clock spring, if that starts failing, then you will get intermittent problems like this.

I DID replace the clock spring around Mar 07, 2022...definitely an aftermarket clock spring too.

Dang it.

The clock spring is cheaper than Cruise Switch, but the cruise switch lettering is coming off... I was going to make decals for the lettering and clear coat the piece to protect the lettering, but then this happened and thought it might need a new switch with nice lettering.

My money is on a bad clock spring. But I would highly recommend going OEM over aftermarket if you can afford it, just avoids a lot of extra hassle later (most of the time, but not always, there are sometimes quality aftermarket parts, I just haven't seen quality replacements when it comes to electronics). There's still a chance that your cruise switch is having a problem if somehow dirt/water got into it. Cruise is so very rarely used on Zs, I've never heard of one actually failing.

I have seen some guys mention loose fitting pins with the aftermarket clock springs, so maybe you can check for that 1st. Tighten up any female harness pin slots that feel loose. This might require a de-pinning tool kit, or using tiny picks/needles to extract the female wire crimp from the plug, then pinch it with pliers to tighten it up. The best method to check is a simple drag test on the female side of the harness. If one pin feels very sloppy/loose, odds are, that's your problem. Of course don't go jamming pins/needles into wires with the battery connected! Disconnect the batt before messing with this stuff, I'm sure you would already do that since the airbag needs to be removed to access these components.

Would be great if you could get a "no parts required repair" on this one.
