Not the worst, the only Foreign 8 I could think of... Name a better one and we'll compare.
Let me take that on...
http://www.supercarstats.com/car/exo...0_modena.shtml
395.0 bhp @ 8,500 rpm
275.0 ft-lb. @ 4,750 rpm
110.15 bhp/L
1/4 mile: 12.8 seconds
Yes torque is good, but how much peak torque do you think a F1 car has?
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
All in all it's rediculous to generalize that Americans make the best V8s, Japanese cars have the best handling, German cars drive with the most Autobahnness.........
BMW makes great engines PERIOD.
Corvettes have great engines PERIOD.
It's equally rediculous to flame BMW owners/fans from an F-Body standpoint on a Nissan forum! (duh)

What a pointless, conversation this has turned into. Tons of apples to oranges and generalizations.
I do have to agree with the station wagon remark- thank god it wasn't chipped or it would have hurt, but it wasn't and that is all that mattered in this check. Congrats on the kill, hope you played it safe!

Also the M3/5 are hit with a gas guzziler tax as are a lot of the AMG's. The corvette and the Z06 get equal or better mpg than the 350Z, but are faster than the M cars.

You didn't mention the M3's 262 ft/lbs of torque. Not very impressive (at least compared to an American V8). You also didn't mention that you have to rev the **** out of the engine to hit that HP peak (7900rpm). And the difference is even greater if you compare to the LS6: 405HP 400 ft/lbs.
Here's another example for you of a foreign car for you: Volkswagon Passat W8. So here's a German automaker with 8 cylinders to work with! The power must be unbelievable! Well, not really: 270HP 273 ft/lbs. That's pretty pathetic for an 8 if you ask me. So at the very least Volkswagon can't do any better than the American companies with 8 cylinders, and I bet Nissan, Honda and Toyota can't either.

Hell my Cobra which cost half as much puts out 320hp with a 4.6L. So from my point of view domestic are right there as far as the hp per liter argument goes.

I'll make an observation:
Comparing the price of a Cobra to an Infiniti Q45 or GS430 is not quite fair. There are other differences between them than just having a V-8 (namely refinement and luxuries). If you want to make it a fair comparison, then compare the cost (not price) of brand new crate motors (anybody know how much those motors cost to produce?).
Besides, the 4.6L in the Mustang GT & Cobra are modular motors much like the 3.5L in the 350Z.
Michael.

Man freak'n car biggots everywhere. Some of you freak'n people should actually get in the car versus spouting second hand magazine crap!!!. The only way your going to understand what your talking about it to actually get in the drivers seat. Trust me you'll find pros/cons in every car, and you'll find different times your wanting one over another.

I'm trading my 00 z28 for the Z. That car simply roasts the tires on command, and no one in this town will race me. However, My 92 prelude's fit and finish puts the Camaro to shame. I swear the blinker and wiper stalks come straight from an 87 Beretta.
I'm geeting older and overall quality is more important to me than shear performance numbers. I'm hopeing to find a nice ballance with thw Z.

The new straight 6 M3 is the perfect example. 333hp 6 cylinder, compairable to a 5.7 liter V8 LS1 engine with 325hp

I can take a fuel injected 5.0L engine out of a Mustang (which makes 225 hp @ 4200rpm and 300 foot-pounds @ 3200rpm) and retune it to put out gobs of naturally aspirated horsepower at a higher rpm. Besides money, it'd cost me some of that torque at 3200rpm.
If you want the engine to rev high, then it has to breathe. German and Jap cars breathe well. They make their power at a high rpm. Likewise they don't make a lot of torque down low. There's no magic or superior technology about it. The same can be done with a 5.0, a LT1, a LS1, etc...

Why is torque always talked about so much, I think it is very overrated.
example, the Z has more torque and less wt than the M3, BUT the M is quicker
another, the Mustang has more torque than an M, the M is quicker.
My dads CLK55 has 392 lbs-torque, BUT the M is quicker!!!
ALL I CARE about is the bottom line, not a spec sheet.
btw, getting an engine to breathe well has to do with revs, good luck getting an American V8 to rev to 8K, good freakin luck (Oh, I know, you can get it done with lots of race parts, BUT it won't be dependable or pass smog). many of these cars have superior technology in the cams, the valves, the intake, pistons and cylinder linings. Don't fool yourself and think that there is no difference in a car that is able to rev like that and one that isn't. If there were NOTHING to it, the americans would do it and still keep the prices low, BUT that is impossible.
