Can't order from dealer this year???

I went to the nearest Nissan dealership today to look at the new Z. I was set on looking into the details of ordering one to exactly what I want.

The catch is the dealer said that I cannot order cars this year and maybe not even next year?? What is up with that? I have seen others posted about how they "Just ordered their Z". Is it too late now or did I go to the wrong dealer or what?

You'll probably get a different response for each dealer you go to. I don't know if you can technically order one now. First the preorders have to take delivery of their vehicles. My guess would be that will take until November (or longer). After that, I think it works like this: dealers will be alloted a certain number of cars based on a number of factors, like sales volume and customer satisfaction, etc. I'm not sure if they can order specific options and so forth. And many dealers it seems will unfortunately be marking them up.

My advice (which you should always do anyway unless you have a special relationship with a particular dealer) is to shop around. Visit as many dealers as you can...try to get one that will guarantee you MSRP...and check out my350z.com frequently for updates and info! ;)

Yes, you can order the Z now. As of this month, you can order production Z's. The allotments are different per dealer. They only get 3 or so Z's per month to order.

Dealers are allowed to choose how they sell the cars. It doesn't make sense to me, but two of the largest dealers in my area are not taking orders after pre-sale (ended July 2002). What they're doing instead is using their allotment to order what they think will sell, and you have to choose from what they have on the lot; first come, first served.

I went to a dealer in a smaller town 50 miles away & they happily took my order. Nissan accepts orders from dealers the first week of the month. My order was placed Sept 5th, I have an October manufacturing date, with delivery late November or early December.

Makes sense to me. If the Z is a popular as we think than if I'm a dealer I'm only ordering the 2 T's (track and touring). Most profit per car. Look at the M3's, that's a $46K car but most probably sell for $56K.

I agree, the one I went to really was only ordering Track and Tourings.. I myself want to order an Performance of which they ordered none of... I am going to try one of the bigger dealers in a bigger town in the area.. The one I went to just got nissan added to their dealer 4 months ago they said so I could probably get more somewhere else..

Thanks for all the input!

I ordered an Enthusiast around 3 weeks ago on the supposed cut-off date for a Dec./possibly Nov. delivery, so I have my fingers crossed. But some dealers told me Jan. or Feb. too, I guess because their allotments were all otted, or they're doing what bhobson333 wrote.
