Default Nissan does not believe the issue affects ’04 Zs

Z tire wear repair

http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=04806104

In response to continuing complaints of uneven front tire wear on 2003 350Z models (AW, Dec. 8, 2003), Nissan is extending all 2003 350Z front-wheel alignment warranties to two years after the car’s original in-service date. Depending on tire wear levels and mileage, Nissan may pay for new tires, reimburse owners who already have replaced their cars’ rubber, or pay owners a prorated portion of their costs. Nissan says improper alignment settings cause the excessive wear, but acknowledges that even cars serviced at its dealerships may continue to exhibit the problem due to improper service work or improperly calibrated alignment equipment.

But here’s bad news for 2004 350Z owners who have experienced what they believe are similar tire wear problems: Nissan does not believe the issue affects ’04 Zs and will not offer the extended warranty coverage to ’04 Z owners.

Nissan will notify owners of 2003 models of the warranty extension later this month. For more information contact Nissan at (800) 343-0294.

I would imagine that if enough '04's start having the same problem, they would do this for them as well. This is costing Nissan big money, and I'm sure they don't want to encourage guys with '04's to go out and shred their tires any faster than necessary if they are in fact having the problem.

5000 miles on my 04 Enthusiast. No "tire growl" yet, too early to tell though.

I just got my 04 track and I have some seriously load tire noise under 35 MPH. I checked my tires2 weeks ago, atleast, and noticed possibly some small amount of uneven tread wear. Gonna check them again tonight after work, its been about 1000 miles since I checked them last.

6800 miles and it's getting noisy

That's not good news. When was your Z made? Mine is 12/03. 1700 miles and keeping my fingers crossed.

My tires were noisy the moment I pulled off the dealers lot. It wasn't as bad as the 03 track I tested before, but, it still was loud. I don't know if I got crappy tires on a brand new car of perhaps my dealer sold me a used Z as new? When I finished signing for my Z and came out to drive off with it, they had already put plates on my car. When I asked them what was up with that, they said they have a bunch of plates in the back and it's a new thing they are doing along with DMV. Who knows.

Anyway, my tires are kinda loud but haven't gotten too much louder. I only have 5,200 miles on my Z.

Grommit,

That sounds awefully fishy ... I would call your DMV and find out if the dealer is telling the truth. I dunno, having plates on a brand-spanking new car raises a "red flag" for me.

my Z came with new plates - in factr, every new car I ever boht had new plates on it - its not out of the ordinary at all.

I have 14k on my car now (04), no uneven wear at all, though i switched from factory rubber very early on (and its one of the best mods I did - ride quality is vastly better, even though I stepped up to 18's)

Hmmm must be a state thing I guess...

I bought the Z new and had to wait for a month before the plates came in ... my cousin just bought his 04 TL and is waiting for his to come in also ...

Matter of fact, I have never met anybody in WA state that bought their vehicle brand new and had the plates right on it. The only cars that have plates on dealer's lots over here are used or demo cars.

Didn't mean to scare anybody, just did not know it was different in other states.

Grommit,
Don't sweat the plate thing. The dealerships have the ability to dial-in to the DMV and perform your registration electronically. The dealerships are issued batches of plates, and they just pick a set out of the batch and "associate them" with your car when they do your electronic registration. This is totally legit. They did it for my car, and I asked them about the process when I heard the finance managers modem go hot.
The thing that pissed me off was the plate screws they used. If it wasn't bad enough that they screwed the plate frame to my bumper, the screws they used to attach the plate to the frame are too long and gouged their own marks in the bumper. They're so long in fact that they started pushing the plate frame away from the bumper as they were screwed in. Bastards!

Only have 1800 on my 04 - thought it a bit noisy when I first got it - on certain concrete - had a Maxima before. I will watch the tires when i get them rotated at 6,000 miles - if they show anything unusual will complain then. The 1990 300ZX I drove 25000 miles - wear was minimal on them . When I traded it for the Maxima the dealer questioned my saying the tires were original. AND - I didnt baby the car either! Liked to zip it around - up to 125 a couple times- smoked a Mercedes the second time.

Thanks kcobean.

It figures. I just wanted to make sure since I really do not trust my dealer TOO much since some of the things they did/said raised the red flag, (although my salesman was cool). Looking at the vin, the shipping location, odo, etc... It'd involve so much work to pass off a used car for new. I just never heard of anyone getting plates before they drive off in their new car before, heh.

Atleast my dealer didn't install my front plates as I asked them not too. I'm sorry you dealer did such a poor job on yours.

Thanks again, man.

I'll be taking my car in for service soon too, so I'll have them take a look at it and see if they will rotate my tires as well. So far the noise is staying at the same level. I have about 5,400 miles on my Z now and it's still not anywhere near as bad as I've seen it on other Z's.

I have an '04 roadster w/18's. I have been checking the tire wear and it has been normal, no evidence of the feathering problem. There hasn't been any unusual tire noise either. Performance tires are going to be louder than "normal" tires. I guess that I've adjusted to it. My first car with Z tires was an '03.5 supra TT. It took a while to adjust to the tire noise. My biggest issue with the Z roadster is that it is too much fun to drive and the miles are piling on!
