what's the proper way in going reverse

this just occurred to me now, after 10 years driving manual.

i get all sorts of answer from my friends so i am asking to the real Z drivers how to let off the clutch properly in reverse.

this is how i do mine:

put car in reverse, let clutch off just a little while giving a touch off gas. since i have a LONG driveway, i just accel../ decel. with my clutch using no brakes through out all this time.

any ideas, questions, woulds be appreciated.

Whenever I manuever that little lever next to the seat into the "R" position, I have noticed that I can only pilot my motorcoach backwards! How very droll!

I ride the clutch only when backing out of parking spots or short driveways. I fully get off of the clutch if I'm going in reverse for a few car lenghts.

Um, yeah, that's what I do too. :(

lay off the clutch

I feather it. I kind of have to. I park in a very tight spot, and want to be extra careful backing out, so I just feather. I'd rather wear my clutch a little than scrap the side of my car alot. Oh well. Some day I'll get a nice garage with plenty of room.

i feel that i have more control of the car by riding the clutch.

thanks for all your replies!

Agreed! I have a short drive - need to look both ways as I reverse out of drive - would it be better if after I got it rolling to put it in neutral and let out the clutch? It seems this is such a short distance it shouldnt make much difference on the life of the clutch. (my drive is only about 30 feet at most -of course another 20 feet before putting it in 1st gear )

eddytsi Apr 24, 2004 11:27 AM

kinda sux looking back both ways before going in reverse cause of those darn blindspots. oh well

alex100 Apr 24, 2004 07:08 PM

hmm i always just nurtraled it and then let it roll back....

Masterfulks Apr 24, 2004 11:09 PM

I do it the same as if I was letting out in 1st gear...

If I'm only going a few feet I'll let out enough to get the car rolling then clutch and let it roll in place....

If longer I let out all the way....
