My Dilemma: 370Z vs. Camaro SS
 

Currently I am driving a 158hp Scion Xb (AKA the Toaster) so either car would be an incredible improvement. When we got my car the reason I couldn't get a 350Z or something of the sort was because of insurance, so I was stuck with a 4-door, non-sports, less than 200 hp car. My Dad promised me once I graduate and turn 18, next June, then I can get a new car. I am very happy with the Scion, but my fuel-broiling engine that is a heart lusts for more. My top two options are ofcourse the Nissan 370Z and the newest Chevy Camaro SS, both around $30-35k.

Chevy Camaro:

Pros:
422 hp LS3 with Tremec-6060 Transmission from Z06 and Viper.
Incredible Design and fairly nice interior
0-60 mph: 3.8 sec.

Cons:
about 3800lbs

Nissan 370Z:

Pros:
332hp with a 6Sp Manual
about 3100-3200 lbs
Incredible Handling

Cons:
Comparitively low power
more expensive
2-seater

I would like the better performing car all around, and I would like the car to be the best of the two on the Nurburgring because I'm planning to take the car there when I can afford it. Please help me out!!!

i don't think you should be doing a 200% - 300% increase in horsepower being only 18...even today's Z is wicked if you don't know what you are doing...BUT it's your life so my best suggestion is to go test drive each when they come out then make your decision...and i'd suggest bringing your dad along to see what type of power these things make cause they aren't just numbers, they can get you in serious trouble REALLY fast

370Z all the way!!!! How about you test drive them both and buy the one you like? Someone like me, who is a Z enthusiast, i'll buy the Z.

I strongly doubt that a 3800lb car will do 0-60 in 3.8 sec with 422hp. :icon14:

On a serious note :)... depends on what kind of driving you want to do. The ring, are you serious?!? You have deeper pockets than I if you can afford to go..but in 12 miles I'd catch you in a Z if you were in the Camaro. People will argue about that saying the Camaro may handle well but I'll tell you it's heavy and not designed for handling nearly as much as the Z (even the current one).

Try them both and see what you feel best in.

Back on topic... I vote Camaro. No need for the 370's insurance to skyrocket and for it's depreciation to take a nosedive. It was bad enough for the 350... ;)

370 = FASTER, Light weight, better handling

Camaro = Heavy, TORQUE, Slower (due to weight), handles like sh*t

I would have real hesitation about the new Camaro. This from a a guy who has a 69 SS and has had it for 25 years ! My dad raced for GM in the 60's, the saying was win on Sunday, car sales on Monday so many dealers sponsored cars. He was a professional GM mechanic and the only cars any of us in the family had were GM.
GM quality went south in the 80's and may just now be returning to some level of respectability. I had several GM cars that just fell apart. My last GM was an 89 Silverado pickup that had me returning to the dealer monthly with problems so I sold it and gave up on american cars. Very sad but the Detroit business model is to hold down cost with cheap suppliers so parts just do not last. This may be changing but I would be very careful in analyzing if indeed it has. We have had several Honda's and Toyota's with absolutley zero defects. Our 07 Z has not had any problems outside the slave cylinder recall.
The auto magazines are raving about the new camaro. I looked it over at the Seattel auto show last weekend. It looks hot and will be hot. Will it start to feel worn out at 25,000 miles? Who knows but that is what GM products use to do.
I would get the 370 if I didn't need a back seat:)

Want to keep insurance low? Pontiac G8 and add a magnacharger.

18 with a sports car...bad combo!! too many rich kids these days...no matter how fast your car is, a tree will always kick your ass.

actually the new camaro is supposed to be quite a handler.
look at ALL the specs.

Don't care too much about other people opinion, most people here won't like it to see such a young teenager driving high-performance sport cars. First, you should work for it when it come to this type of car so that you could appreciate it more. Second, you need experience when it come to sport cars with this much power. You say that 370Z is low on power, sure when you compare it to some 400-500 hp car, but it already twice the power of you Xb and it's a rear-wheel drive....that is a "big" different and you need experience to control it.

You are going to be 18 soon, you should be mature enough to pick out your own car. It's quite simple, just go for the car that you like the most!!

P.S. You shouldn't leave out the new Dodge Challenger, it's a great looking car with 425hp Hemi and rear wheel drive.

I think the 370Z is not an option for me anymore. I want something with back seats and that is cheap to mod. So it will either be the Camaro SS or the Evo X. But it will more than likely be the Evo X.

Sorry, I meant 4.8 seconds. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I am a very young and inexperienced driver as much as i hate to admit it, but I feel the easiest way of learning is experiencing it first hand. I ruled out the Dodge Challenger because it's sorta boring looking compared to the eithers and Dodge quality is no where close to Chevy or Nissan, same with the new Mustang GT coming out. For you douchebags who laugh at my dreams and intentions, take your envy and go to the Ford forums. It costs $2,000 to rent the 'Ring for an hour and that's all I need, plus I don't expect to spend less than $10,000 getting my car overthere and paying for hotels and stuff. And I said when I can afford it! I'm planning on being an Engineer so I'm hoping before I'm 30. I've loved the Camaro since the first concepts and I would love to own one, but I'm in love with the Z's design. I will test drive each and make a decision with my father! Thanks again
