I wonder if the Z had the sport pack with wider tires and better brakes if it would have been able to take it for the win. It's impressive that without sport pack it still managed to nip at the heels of the Cayman and didn't let the carrera pass it

Sure about that, even though it didn't have the wing?

It looked like the sp wheels, and at around 3:28, it looks like a rev-match downshift... but it's hard to tell. I would assume if it wasn't, the driver would have blipped the throttle.

I don't want to be that guy, because I like 370z's and all but "caugh" the nismo 350z still pulled a better lap time then the 370z, just saying.

I don't really know what I just saw...what were the specs on the two porshes?? As in power and weight? Was that a 911 turbo, or just regular 911, if such a thing exists? I'm just wondering why the cayman s did better than the 911, but the 370 didn't beat it?? Help please!

I'm trying to sort this all out. Let me clear up what I DO know.

That Z34 is a base and does have the sport pack, but not the aero pack. It also has the radio delete. This configuration is impossible here as Nissan has packaged the Z34 a little different here. This does however make it the best Z34 for this task at the moment, save for maybe if it had the aero pack.

The car ran a 1:06.754 on the third lap. This lap was pretty much alone as the Z34 closed the gap on the Porsche Cayman S (PDK).

Yes, the 911 is the base Carrera. There are many levels of Carrera. They have a website. Check it out.

According to another thread on this site, the NISMO 350Z posted a near identical 1:06.663. Considering variations in line due to traffic, driver, weather, blah, blah, blah, this pretty much settles the arguement that the 370Z produces NISMO 350 Z performance levels with vastly improved ride comfort, etc. Neither is considered a looker by everyone.

By the way, the VQ35HR 350Z (non-NISMO) posted a 1:07.63 on Tsukuba during a nice weather day.

ok, so I went through all the BS on porshe's site, and I still don't get how the s took the 911?? And it looks on paper as if the 370 should be able to beat the cayman s but definitely not the 911, esp. given the weight differences...so what gives?

If you pay attention to the times posted, that's exactly what happened, albeit marginally.

The 911 did post the fastest lap times both during the race and during qualifying/time attack. The 911's time attack times was quite a bit faster than the rest of the field. With that said though, I'm surprised the 911 could not pull more on the 370Z on the straights, but this mostly due to driver. Regardless though, these BM videos are simply for entertainment.

BTW, the 997 was PDK equipped and the new base 997 is almost up to par with the past 997S in terms of performance.

Oh and might as well DL the entire episode in torrent. Hi-def version too

Thanks for posting. They should have round 2 with a Nismo 350Z and e46 M3. Take out the 135 and S2000.

The 911 can take the 370Z on a straight, its just that a turn was coming up so he backed out. Good race!

NISMO 350Z = 1:06.663
370Z = 1:06.754

Difference = 0:00:091

funny thing is that you don't mention exactly how much faster.

WOW I'm slightly let down by the performance of the 370Z. Because in an early test on the same track against an S2000 a HR 350Z ran a 1.07.63. The 370Z isn't even a full second quicker. Well thats reasuring, I'll stick with my 08. And just for fun I posted up the time on the "super special" edition Nismo 380 Superleggera.
ALL THE TIMES ARE FOR THE SAME TRACK

Nismo 350Z = 1:06:663
HR 350Z = 1:07:63
370Z = 1:06:754
Nismo 380 Superleggera = 1:03:888

HR vs 370Z difference = 0.876 sec
HR vs nismo difference = 0.967 sec
Nismo vs 370Z difference = .091 sec

I think the 370 did an outstanding job. It is not surprising that the Cayman S beat the 911 base on that track. The Cayman is the best handling of the two and with a short track it has more then enough power to hold off the 911. Given that the 370 weighs about 300 lbs more then the Cayman and only has around 10 more hp more (maybe less as Porsche always understates the power of their engines) speaks very well of the 370. For around thirty grand less, it speaks very well indeed.

Actually the fastest time at the tsukuba circuit for the Nismo 350z was a 1:05.9, thats a difference of roughly 0.8 seconds, and being not much faster in a straight line, the 370z's track performance isn't a night and day difference compared to a nismo 350z, so really their on same level as far as track performance, with either one being "better" than one another.

i'm just waiting to see how well the nismo 370z will perform

These times are difficult to compare, especially with different drivers.

With that said, roughly a second on a 65-66sec lap is a good deal faster.

Um, no. That's a previous model Cayman S, with a standard 6 spd manual tranny and 295 HP - not the new one - in fact, he grabs a gear at 2:36. Dyno tests have shown the car to have right around 295 HP... so no fudging there. However, the car only weighs around 3000 pounds, and coupled with the mid-engine platform is a handling dream. The 370Z might have 30HP more... but it also has 300 pounds more weight to drag around, and the same torque. Both cars have about the same power/weight ratio. If it was a new Cayman, it would have wiped the field.

The 911 is a NEW model, with the PDK tranny. However, they neutered it with the base tire package, 235/265 18"s... Also, it was plain as day in the video that the 911 was NOT being driven hard and to it's limits. With the PDK, more power, and less weight than a 370Z, it could (and should) have taken it on the longer straights.

The 370Z was, indeed, the best possible Z for this test - light as possible, but with the sport pack. I doubt the aero pack would give any significant benefits, if not actually slow it down.

And the "best" and "ta" times are off for the 911... they don't compute.

So basically, we have a previous model Cayman S, a neutered 911 driven softly, and the best possible 370Z configuration.
