It was nearly a year ago when we reported on a NAGTROC forum user getting hit with a $20,000 bill to replace his toasted transmission after using Launch Control (LC1) on his GT-R. In time for the second model year of the car, Nissan [url=http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/20/nissan-drops-launch-control-from-2010-gt-r/]first dropped Launch Control,[/url then they decided to include it, but with safeguards (LC2). In the meantime, a growing number of owners of the initial batch got together and filed a class action suit against Nissan in the hopes of receiving some compensation for their transmissions.

That suit was settled last weekend in California. The verdict: any owners with LC1 will have their warranties reset for 5 years/60,000 miles once they upgrade to LC2, and the LC2 transmission and internals -- including VDC -- will be fully covered by Nissan. If you use the LC2 with VDC on and something breaks, everything's covered. If you turn the VDC off and use LC2 and something breaks, you're in the poo.

However, if you turn the VDC off and use LC2, then turn VDC back on and everything is fine, then you drive for a while and then a few weeks later something breaks, Nissan will have to prove that turning the VDC off weeks earlier is what caused the breakage. Previously the burden of proof was on the owner; now it's on Nissan. Owners of 2009 cars will also get a $75 coupon for service at a GT-R-approved dealership. Owners will receive notices in the mail with the details. Whew. Glad that's over. Now can we get back to enjoying one of the finest cars on the roads today? Hat tip to Matt

Then why even offer LC2? I have to say though, that car is quick as shat and will put shats in a lot of pants even w/o LC1 LC2 VDC or whatever.

From my understanding (pls correct me if I'm incorrect) LC2 lowers the rpm to 3k vs LC1 of 4500. Also there was a video where it was explain that LC1/LC2 is not ment for a drag race app. It's ment to restrict RPM to get you out of snow/mud/stuck situation.

It's a ECU/TCU flash. Covered under warranty I believe.

You believe that horse crap? The GTR would have been laughed at without LC. Its what created the hype and the orders at launch. When the mags stopped using it the GTR's numbers stopped being even noteworthy.

I think the court finding should be all GT-R owners get fine $1000 for buying a performance car with an Auto Tranny.

Need to watch the vid below... The GTR is .1 faster w/o using LC1 or LC2.

So a new gtr is faster without lc but what about the older non revised GTRs. Their numbers were 0-60 at 3.3 and 11 sec 1/4. What happens when you turn their lc off? At the time LC was needed to make good magazine times. Atleast that's my opinion and why it shipped with a 5 use limit.

LC1 most definitely helped to sell cars, but at the end of the day it's not meant to be a drag car.

LC2 can be used in either auto or manual mode, and it is used by placing the VDC in "R" mode, this does not void the warranty since the VDC is not turned off, hence, with LC2, you can launch to your hearts content and keep your warantee. With lc1, you had to turn off the VDC.

Some folks want to completely disengage the VDC when road course racing to push the car even harder/have more control than vdc R would allow. Nissan now is saying if you do this and it breaks, it's on you. But, if the tranny breaks a couple weeks or months after having turned off the VDC for whatever reason, the burden of proof in now on Nissan to prove you caused the failure and not the other way around, much fairer imo.

Entaille 09-22-2009 01:31 PM

so how many owners already paid for the upgrade? do they get compensated? did they *ever* have to pay for the upgrade? I am not informed... just curious : )

celsius 09-22-2009 04:14 PM

I'm not sure of anyone paying for the LC2. I believe it's just a change to the ECU programming. I still haven't gotten any letter from Nissan saying I should change over to LC2, nor anything from the dealer........go figure.
