Chronicles of a 06'Roadster......Just because
Just gathering my thoughts about this project, having conversation about direction.
Bought an 06' Black Roadster (Grand Touring) in July for my son (because he is spoiled). We'll get that out of way early. Began modding faily quickly because I'm driving it at the moment until he has his license. Current mods: MRev/5/16 space 700.00 Fast Intentons metalic HFC 600.00 HKS TI dual exhast 1250.00 Hotchis sways (f) and (r) 300.00 JWT PopCharger 100.00 New Engine at 12K (oil consumpption) 0.00 Work S1 wheels 9.5 & 11 2800.00 PS2 Tires 265 and 285 1500.00 Ganador Mirrors 450.00 Evo-R CF shifter cover 50.00 Seibon VT CF Hood 650.00 Veilside V3 Widebody Kit 1300.00 KW variant 3 1700.00 Invested Approx $12,000. So this is were we are at for the moment. This has been my obsession, not my son's, BTW. I think I'm have accomplished just about every mod for N/A with the exception of cams and working the heads. Its not going FI because I don't want my son to have that much HP initially. Once the body kit goes on, the entire car will be repainted and that will add 5K to the list. So whats my point? As I said, it was more of a recap and open for discussion re. the existing mods. Any opinions re. the mods and the direction of this vehicle would be welcomed. (and please, we see these as just cars, its a hobby for me and sons, so hold the young driver comments) |
Hey Rick you forgot to add your Momo Tube shift knob :icon17:

What a cool dad you are. Are you going to paint it black again?

I had to post this response I was so impressed with how concise it was.
Thanks, Helldorado! Maybe give some of you younger guys an idea on whats up and also show you how to responsibly post! Ok, we're focused! Lets look at where we are at and focus on building a balanced vehicle. So lets break this down by area. Engine New rev-up engine Drivetrain Stock flywheel / clutch OE VLSD Intake/Exhaust JWT Popcharger M-REV - 5/16 spacer high flow cats HKS Ti Dual exhaust Suspension Hotchkis F/R sway bars KW variant 3 Wheels / Tires Work S1 wheels 9.5 & 11 PS2 Tires 265 and 285 Brakes Stock Brembos Exterior Seibon VT CF Hood Veilside V3 Widebody Kit Ganador CF Mirrors Interior Evo-R CF shifter cover The main thing is going to be focusing on keeping the car balanced. Since this is Taylor's first vehicle you're going to want to make sure its not overkill and will allow him to recover when he makes some first timer driving mistakes! Now this is my viewpoint on how to do a balanced vehicle, you can take what you want from it. Honestly, most of it is overkill for Taylor because a stock Z is a lot for a new driver and it'll probably be a while before he gets a vehicle as well setup as this will be! But a lot of it is transferrable to the G, or sellable. Engine Don't bother to crack it open and mod the internals. Leave it as it is! You're done! Walk away! Get a good oil and filter, add water wetter to the coolant and be done with it! However, adding an ECU reflash would really optimize your airflow mods. The stock ECU cannot handle all the airflow mods, its going to get lean. If you're going to throw some naaaawz at it for some fun for yourself in the meantime, then I recommend getting a UTEC because you can setup a nitrous map for it and still have an optimized map for the NA tune. Something like the Stillen engine brace will help off the line response, but not necessary. Easy, inexpensive piece to add on though. Drivetrain Consider a short shifter. I don't think you have one. Lightweight flywheel and clutch will probably be fun for you, but Taylor might have a bit harder time learning to drive stick with it. The super lightweight ones have tricky engagement to launch from idle. That's something you could do for now, enjoy it, swap back to stock while Taylor is learning and once he's comfortable or burned up the clutch, swap back to aftermarket. Unless you want to opt for the ATS Carbon LSD, you're done Intake/Exhaust Headers, that's all you have left. Will open up that last bit of airflow. Good learning mod. Little pricey for what you get back from them, but with a custom tune, better gains. Suspension I'd recommend sticking with less than a 1" drop. Aftermarket STB's aren't going to add anything. So all that's left is some chassis reinforcement braces like the GT-Spec bars and the camber / toe rods you'll need for adjusting after the drop. Most anything else is overkill without track applications. Solid diff bushing, traction rods, caster arms... not necessary for now. Wheels / Tires You're good here until the widebody goes on. Brakes You can get a better pad and rotor when they're up for replacement. Better fluid and braided lines are key. Master cylinder brace will help pedal feel but is not necessary. Exterior I'd encourage you to reconsider the widebody. I honestly think its going to be a lot more effort than its really worth. Once you get the hood painted and in order, it can really look good with some of the bumper or lip kits. I just think the widebody is going to cause you more headaches than its really worth for now. The first time he gets into a minor fender bender or gets tapped, keyed, whatever... its going to be a mess. A quality urethane lip kit will have great fitment, be more resistant to cracking and still add a lot to the appearance of the vehicle. Interior Whatever floats your boat man... If you're still considering taking the car back once he goes to college and converting it to a project car, I think that's the time to look at the widebody and rebuild the car for something really special. Otherwise, I know you're considering the new G37 coupe when it comes out, I think that car will hold a lot of potential for you if you go that way. __________________ Van Meter Auto || ClearCorners.com || Car V2 || Team ZaG || helldorado's FA Photo Album Are you ready to join the FA Elite? |
