extended warranty for roadsters

I tried searching but couldn't find anything specific to roadsters. I have an 08 and the factory warranty is about to end. Have any of you guys gotten an extended warranty? If so, does it cover the top? any additional info on where, how much, co-pay, etc would be greatly appreciated!

Extended Warranties are worthless. Just put the money aside that you would have paid for the warranty and use that for any needed repairs.

I paid $1700 for 120.000 miles/7 years of coverage on my '08. Except for parts like brake pads and tires, there are virtually no exclusions. Yes, it's a gamble, but I intend to keep this car a long time, and it's a good bet in the next 80.000 miles/5 years or so that something worth $1700 will break - maybe a slave cylinder, A/C compressor, alternator, PW motor, etc. That stuff can add up quickly.

This dealer sells the Nissan warranty at very close to cost:

I paid $2100 for best extended warranty Nissan offered and am so glad I did!

5th bow issue repair will cost <$500 instead of $1400-2100. Also used it to replace catalytic converter, clutch master cylinder and o2 sensor.

It has paid for itself. If you keep your Z a long time, like me, I think it's worth getting.

Make sure you ask for and KEEP a list of covered components - some top parts are covered - motors, actuators, etc.

so most of the top's moving pieces will be covered? do they tend to break often?

Tops most of the time are not covered for normal wear and tear. No they do not break often.

Ahem ... I beg to differ!!

Search for "5th bow" or "top problems" here and you'll see LOTS of '04 & '05 breakdowns. That's why I bought the warranty.

Not everything is covered but it will (after arguing) cover 2/3 of my expensive 5th bow repair.

It's not that common of a problem, and how much was your 5th bow repair bill?

Seriously? Did you search? I counted 16 different people just on my350z.com. I know because I sent excerpts from those posts when I argued my repair should be covered. One guy commented that top issues are almost as bad as the tire feathering problem.

I paid $491 today instead of $1400+.

Here's the list of "convertible top" items covered by Nissan's best extended warranty:

If you want the original PDF, it's an easy download from Nissan.

Blooster 03-03-2011 03:54 PM

Not sure why, but my list is a little different. Maybe it's because I bought the warranty after owning the car for a few years.

My Nissan Security+Plus Component Coverage Guide brochure lists these components:

My Nissan Security+Plus Vehicle Protection Plan Service Agreement says this:

If you buy one, get it in writing!

Mine is the "Gold Preferred", yours looks like it might be the "Silver". I bought it after having my car for ~1 year, for ~$1700. Mine isn't a roadster, though, even though the paperwork shows those parts as being covered.

dfresh713 03-03-2011 07:23 PM

Those parts are cheap and easy fixes.

johns350 03-03-2011 07:58 PM

perfect timing

I was about to ask the same question. I've had the top replaced once under warranty - like to keep things covered 'just in case'.

Currently have the Nissan Gold Security+ (when I bought the car new). Wondering if the top went again if it would be covered. It was covered 100% under the original warranty.

Love the convertible - but Texas sun is tough on it....

Only 21k miles - '06. Like to keep it a few more years...

hahahaha, yeah I'm the guy who made that comment!
This top issue was always "swept under the rug"!

I bought the extended warranty based on that statement. That was a mistake, they didn't cover the 5th bow (electric) motor. And when was the last time Nissan offered a vehicle with a hydraulic top? I think that document is intentionally misleading.

Exactly, unless you have a Ferrari extended warranties most the time are a waste of money. Just ask Suzy Orman :icon38:

I'm speaking on a personal note though, someone on this forum scared me into buying an extended warranty when I bought my Z b/c of the convertible top repairs. Well I paid a butt load for the warranty and never had an issue. Doing more research would have saved me a lot of money. If you do a cost/benefit analysis i'm sure most the people here would hold onto the money and use it if a repair was necessary. That is why these types of warranty places are in business.

Starchecker 08-20-2012 08:06 PM

Unbelievable, I was kicking myself for not getting the extended warranty, now that I have had over $3,000 in repairs. Just dropped $1800 on two side motors for the top and it's still not fixed. But it looks like the warranty doesn't cover a lot of the roof issues anyway. Yeah that is total SNAKE crap to say it covers the Hydraulic Motors when there aren't ANY, they are electrical. Nothing hydraulic about the top at all.

I would be pissed as hell if when I needed the warranty I paid for they came up with crap like that. Going to a non Nissan repair shop you can get the 5th bow replaced for about $800, so they basically paid about $300 of the $800 repair.

goracerx 08-20-2012 08:30 PM

I cancelled my warranty. There is a difference between extended warranty and after the original expires warranty. The dealer will call them the same but they are not. You can only extend the original warranty before it expires. You also have to get the TOL platinum version if you want everything covered. I was lead to beleive mine was extened becuase my car only had 4k miles on it but I added it after the 3 years and it was no where close to what the extended version covered. I cancelled it because the only reason for purchase was for the top which it excluded.

I have 04 ZR, bought the 7 yr Nissan factory warranty when I picked up the car new. Had tire feather and soft top ripped at seam problems. All occured during the normal warranty peroid, and fixed with no charge. Never used the 7 yr warranty. Now it is expired.
If you decide to buy an extended warranty, READ THE FINE PRINTS to determine what is covered. After I paid for mine, I discovered it does NOT cover the top itself. If I am doing this all over again, I would not pay for the extended warranty.
