4 12's too much?

I have an awesome oppertunity to get 4 12's absolutly free...going to be running 5.1 surround ....any thoughts on 4 12's in a 350...may be getting my car sponsered so amps speakers and subs might be free..

Bubble Feb 14, 2006 01:19 PM

2 12" already too much. ;) BUT be the first one. Prepare to get another batter to support the all the power those 4 subs suck out.

plumpzz Feb 14, 2006 01:26 PM

Keep 2 and send 1 my way, and give 1 back. That way, the karma in the world is in equality.

four 12s, provide they are quality subs, is too much unless you plan to:

1: compete in SPL competitions

2: doing a full on show car

too much weight, too much power consumption for the amp to power it, too much sapce, too much bass, etc etc :)

just turn the gain way down :)

TruBluZ Feb 14, 2006 01:46 PM

Yes, that is a little excessive.:icon14:

GQ 350z Feb 14, 2006 01:50 PM

Overkill. Do a ported 12" super sub..tune low aka 29-32 hz, thank me later.

bbhiznors Feb 14, 2006 02:03 PM

the subs would be turned real low except for spl...has any one done 4 in a z before...if they were turned up the subs would definaltey be overkill

I have four 12" woofers in my +1000 square foot living room and they're more than enough. Wonder what they'd sound like in the 15 square feet of the Z?

Way too much - even with SPL competitions unless you're shooting for the unlimted classes.

There is this issue where if you connect two speakers to the same amplifier you get twice the loudness but each get's half the power for a wash in volume. Adding a second amplifier or one twice the wattage will give you twice the sound amplitude but that's just 3 dB - about one click on a normal home amplifier's volume control.

Even my two little 10" woofers driven with music from a 560 watt amplifier will drive the SPL up into levels that will destroy your hearing in a matter of an hour or so of listening - we're talking F-4 Phantom in afterburner on the flightdeck of an aircraft carrier loudness. The entire car is shaking and vibrating. It's hard to see as your eyes start to vibrate ... and I'm not sure that's really good for your eyes even.

Practice safe sound or spend the rest of your life with hearing loss or ringing in the ears. At least my loss is military service related and I get a few bucks extra in my pension but that doesn't make up for the loss. I keep my volume down at safe levels and the pair of 10" woofers are plenty enough to wrench guts on the bass notes.

You could run 4 12" woofers but you'll not get the full volume out of them and retain your senses. If you're into competition you'd know better and not need to ask the question.

I have the Jl stealth box and that consists of two 10s and thats too much.

andyisphat2004 Feb 15, 2006 09:21 PM

great post...actually 4 12"s probably isnt enough, can you get your hands on 6 15"s instea?

pingrr Feb 16, 2006 04:01 AM

If you plan on going for SPL contest. You will need to have the sub box ported. Box volume would need to be at least 3 qubic feet per sub. Thats a 12qubic foot box in the Z. You could do a sealed box and cut the box volume in half but the bass output would be considerably less than that of a ported box.

4 12's could be done in a smaller inefeciant box for show purposes howerver you could match the out put of the smaler box with 1 or 2 12's in the correct enclosure.

Anyone know where I can find a ported sub case for one 12'.

Thanks

pingrr Feb 16, 2006 10:24 AM

Qlogic makes all kinds of sub boxes. Most of thier stuff will just be a genaric square box though. If you want a ported box in the truck of a Z you will most likley have to have a custom box built.

I wonder if that's even possible?

best bet, build your own or have a shop build one for you, tuned specifically to waht the sub should get :) pre fab ported is ALOT worse than pre fab sealed...unless you get lucky and just it happens that hte box matches the tuning freq of your sub...

if you want to compete you need about a 1.5 cubic foot box per sub with 2 4" aeroports.
