Check out JDM Eclipse's awesome new AVN units!!!
The top of the line AVN8860 features 4 disc intenal dvd changer, 7 inch WVGA screen, a new 3D nav system with actual buildings depicted, and a 40gb hard disk!!! The nav on this system looks absolutely amazing. Too bad it will probably not reach the U.S. market for a while :(

Not a chance ... while I was at Pioneer I got a demo of this whole software package (Pioneer will release theirs in Japan shortly), but they have not (nor will or can they) commit to doing this for the US. It is simply too difficult and too large to do for the US. Basically, they made video game-type renderings of every individual buildings in all of Japan's major cities ... a task that would take years and millions of dollars to do for the US. I do believe we will see this in maybe 5 years .. but believe me ... years end is a pipe dream ;) sorry guys jim edit - those buildings that you see in the pictures are actually real life representations of the buildings that you are passing ... tourist navigation through Japan will be SIGNFICANTLY easier with this technology. :) just thought I would point that out |
:+1: on above. 3-D geographical mapping on a scale as large as the US, even if done for the 30 major metro areas, is no small task...financially or time-wise. Of course it will happen, much as everything else does, but after a long time.

Even though the SAT-Images are a few years old in some cases, Id like to see Google Earth integration.
|
It's on its way (google earth-cellphone integration) ;)

Q: Why do you need 3D pictures of the buildings ... that you can see around you by opening your eyes and looking outside the car?
A: You've got 100% coverage with limo tint and can't see sh*t in broad daylight. A: You're trying to find a place and don't have the street address but you know it's a little building with a set of golden arches in front of it. A: You went to public schools and can't read a map even from a GPS unit! :icon38: |
the 3D is cool. REGARDLESS of your 3 answers. lolz

I am banking on us getting the AVN8860 but with our mapping system and the AVN7905--probably by the fall or early next year.
I think it would be very expensive to integrate that technology into ours for 3d replicas of buildings. Too big of a country--plus always expanding. |
By the way, does anyone know if Eclipse is comming out with Bluetooth and another DVD player or DVD Changer? They discontinued their small DVD player.
