i have the understrut box for the (2) 10's, and its been ok for awhile, but i just installed a 12" sub for my friend in his 4runner, and it got me missing that deep bass that you feel in your chest. ive never really loved the 10's, and wanted to move up to a 12. question is if i put the 12 in the spare tire compartment, and go on a road trip, will i be able to still fit the spare in the trunk, as cargo on top of the sub? thanks.

depends what 12 you buy. different models require different amounts of air space. The nice thing about 10s is that they usually don't need much airspace. Getting your speakers "deep" is all about tuning. You can make 10s hit just as low as 12s depending on the box and setup.

I promise you ... you can have 2 10s that will keep up if not embarass your buddy's 12".

ok dont flame me, cuz i know a lot of you are die hard jl fans here...i sell audiobahn stuff online, so i have (2) aw1005t subs and an a18001dt amp to push them. im wired at 2 ohms. ive tried tons of subs just for fun, from cerwin vega to pioneer, and every single audiobahn sub. these definately hit the hardest. dont get me wrong- they hit really hard. just not as deep as id like. and ive got the same ebay box that everyone else here has.

Not gonna flame as a JL supporter ... but I am firmly against most any and all Audiobahn stuff. It is great for show ... but there is much better out there.

Go ahead and sell those guys and grab something different

Just get better 10s with more power. My single 10 in my Z in a sealed box (0.59 cu-ft) is pushing 144 (like 143.8/9) db. If you don't feel that in your chest then you've got some medical problems to deal with ~ not sub problems.

As I say this ~ it gets to proper box building techniques along with proper amps but 10s can pound.

I have a 12" Alpine type R with a 300watt mono amp in a custom box that POUNDS. I was a huge JL fan but this Alpine kicks a**. Check out the dual voice coil that’s wired in parallel for a 2-ohm load. Nothing hits like a 12. I know you can find them at best buy for $200 damn good price for a 1500w peak power sub. The only bad thing is the Z can’t take it. I'm starting to find rattles everywhere.

^wierd that you say that....i have had my Zenclosure for about 2 months now with 1 JL10w6, and now when my music is turned off I can hear a rattle in the rear hatch...hmmm....

Nope.

You best bet would be to build the box in front of the strut bar if you really want a 12

Do you plan on using another audiobahn subwoofer (12")?

no, if i went to a 12 (and i was planning on doing the spare tire box, so it might change) i was gonna read up on this forum and see what worked best for everyone, and maybe meet someone locally to hear in person what they have. but no, im not stuck on audiobahn. actually i think im gonna start carrying jl here in the next few weeks

audiobahn subs...they do have a meaty bump in the 60hz ish range the most i have heard, but ultra low frequency is not their strong suit, nor is basic sound quality.

i agree with jim and other memgbers who say that a good 10 will do fine for ultra low end. my idmax10 in my car easily reaches down to 10hz that i can feel, while some 12s i have installed cant say the same...

you arent that far from me, if you want, i will be happy to help you out with install suggestions and what not...

if you do a 12 in the spare tire well, just make usre you grab a relatively shallow sub or you will be raising your floor by quite a bit...

if you like low stuff, my pesonal recommendation is go with an idq12, put it in a 1 cub feet enclosure, and have fun

A proper setup & power for a jJL10w7 will put that 12 to shame.. but I did have CV stroker 15's (2) in my old gsx & those made my brain hurt... all about preference. Having a custom install next week for 2 10w7's in my G... I'll let you know how it comes out. Bing I hope you are ready for my G; better eat your wheeties. lol. Can't wait to have this done.

yeah youre exactly right 16. these things sound great at about 60hz, but they really lack that low freq range. i guess ill wait till i pick up the jl line, try those, and if those dont do the trick, ill give you a call

i just got a alpine type x 10 and according to the guy at Zenclosures. ThE Ones hes installed pound about as hard or harder than a jl w7. And I only paid 200 (new) for it so i hope it sounds good. My box gets in next week I will keep you guys updated.

You might get one or two hertz lower with a really good 12" over a really good 10" maybe.

The answer to your original question StereoNeeds is yes. I have a 12" in the tirewell and I just went to the garage to try to fit the spare above it. I put down a plastic liner over the sub grill and the spare fits wonderfully with about 4" of gap between it and the strut. Go for the 12" I've had both and there is a big difference in feeling..If there wasn't they wouldn't make 12" subs...think about it
