Has anyone tried 6.5" JL subs yet?
 

I am currently trying to outline a future stereo build for my 08 NISMO Z. I have not decided the specifics of it yet but I had an idea to use the new JL Audio 6.5" subwoofers in the stock rear speaker locations. Anyone think this would work? Anyone tried it yet? I have searched, and while finding some sick stereo builds, I have yet to find any info regarding this new driver. If someone has already tried it and I just can't find it, please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert, but one big concern is how you seal the rear speaker area off giving it that ~.15ft^3 space it needs for best sound quality.

Save some money and get the CSS SDX7 ($100 each). Much better driver that that JL thing.

There have been some reported cases of installs using (I think) the eD 6" sub in the stock rear locations. It can be done and I think it could be done with a great level of success if you take the time to seal off proper volume chambers for each driver.

I have only tried the ED sub in a custom made box and they sound great for the size. But, one would have to run a few to get decent bass.

Tangbang makes 6.5 subwoofers. I have heard 4 of them sealed, and they sound AMAZING!! That's what I'm doing for my next setup. I lol@160$ a pc for a 6.5 subwoofer..

It was 4+ years ago, and not in the Z, but I had two 6W0-4 subs in a ported enclosure in an EG civic hb with, if I remember correctly, powered by half of a 300/4. It was impressive in that car. I worked at a shop at the time, and I would have customers sit and listen and guess at what size subs they were. They would guess a pair of 10s, even 12s by one guy in that small car, and this was with only 150 w rms and the W0s. The car I am sure made a huge difference. They take up so little space, why not do a ported enclosure in the hatch, or just a single 10 ported? I don't think you will get the results you are looking for vs the investment if placed in the OE locations...

The Tangband is not a bad choice either and is even a little cheaper than the CSS SDX7 that I recommend very highly.

Have you ever heard one? If not I would have never thought about 6.5 subs at all. I heard 4 6.5" tangbangs in a sealed enclosure, in a is300. It would sound far louder/better then a 10"/12" setup anyday.

there is only so far a 6.5" speaker will go.. it will never produce the bass of a 10/12" setup. Sure it maybe louder with mid bass or midrange and sound cleaner doing it.. but it will never hit low notes.. i don't need a subwoofer for midbass.. i want a subwoofer for bass

suffice to say that the 10" and 12" set ups you heard must be crapola

however on the extreme end Alan Dante is almost hitting 150 db on the TL with 1 each 8"

an 8" driver in a transmission line can get pretty deep for an 8"

but not gangsta deep like we like

I agree (as usual) with doug and 350zspl that a 6.5" sub can not replace a 10" or larger sub.....BUT I will say that not everyone is willing to give up any space for an enclosure or they may not be looking for gobs of low end. These 6.5" 'sub'woofers are a good compromise between having an enclosure and having no sub-bass at all.

I have 4 7kv2's in my G. . .they hit WAY lower frequencies and much louder SPLs than the two JL 10w0's I had prior. The only louder setup I had was 3 10" kicker S10D (last of the round solobarics) 5 inches from my fanny in a short cab pickup truck. Plus, when you buy 4 or more, the price drops from ~75$ per sub to $60 per sub. Since I love never ending projects, I bought two more and plan on re-inventing my install. :icon38:

Unless you are trying to re-invent the wheel... Why would you want to go with a 6" sub... You can get a 10" or a 13" sub in the glove box.

Apparently I was not clear enough in my original post. My intention was to use the stock locations to avoid having to create/build a large box for a 10"+ sub which would add considerable weight to the vehicle. I may end up not doing this but I thought I'd throw it out there as an idea and see if anyone else had thought of it. If this is going to be too much trouble to do correctly... then it will be too much trouble, end of story. I'll come up with another idea. I am not looking to push any major SPL, just have some decent depth, apparently that also was not conveyed in the original post.:icon8:
