WTF? Shop says Diamond Audio S600s won't fit...

Okay, so I dropped my car off at the stereo shop yesterday. I'm paying these guys a LOT of money to do a high quality custom install of my new system.

They call me this morning and say, "Yeah, we need to put 5-1/4s in your door 6-1/2s won't fit." I tell them there is no way I'm downsizing to 5-1/4", and to talk to the installer again. Have you tried using spacers??

Anyways, I've seen S600s speakers installed in other Zs here on the board. Nobody else has run into this issue with spacers have they? I think these guys are smoking crack.

SPACERS is all I can say, GL.

they are being lazy.. if they are doing "custom" install of which you speak (highly doubtful) .. they would simply fabricate some spacers... i did for mine by using the factory speakers....takes a total of 5 minutes :D

the problem lies in the window clearance... nissan designed the window to slide down **just** behind the factory speakers so anything deeper requires spacers.. but not too much or you bump the inside of the door cover

Well, the install is "custom" - like the amp rack is being produced on a CNC machine (I can't wait to see it.)

I just don't know WHAT they are thinking about the speakers. It's doubtful they are being lazy, more likely that they are busier with some dotcom guys Ferrari, or some Seahawks players H2 (this place is high end.)

BTW, did you do this with Dimaond Audios, or something else?

Does not matter. If you use 6.5", you have to use a spacer almost guaranteed. Look at the stock door speaker when you have the chance. It is molded into a plastic spacer that is at least 1/2" thick.

Spacers Can Be Made

I bought my s600s from user KJ-350. He provided a set of custom spacers. They are basically a couple of 3/4" thick fiberboard cut to the shape of the stock speaker basket. PM him if you need details.

jtree007 Oct 3, 2003 01:02 PM

6.5" is the right size for all the speakers in the car. You don't even have to make spacers if you don't mind destroying the stock speakers. If you don't want to do that, they can make a custom one out of MDF, depending on how deep the speakers are they will need to use two 1/2" MDF boards together as the spacer or if the speaker is not that deep, then jsut a 3/4 boad will be plenty.

I would question their abilities if they could not figure that out on their own... This is not something that is uncommon, nor is it anything dificult.

Don't be dazzaled by a place that looks High End... What is improtant is how stkilled the installers are and how well they will take care of your car.

Right, I've made my own spacers in previous vehicles.

Anyways, I guess they were using a pre-made 1/2 spacer; apparently MDF is below them :)

Anyways, they went ahead and made some 1" spacers, and everything is good now.

lol. I saw your car this morning, Jason. I just had a 20 gig Keg installed in the wife's new Sienna, and they did some custom fab work to get the remote display mounted. They're trying to talk me into doing a 7998 + a W7 somewhere. You're doing JL amps too, yeah?

That is my basic set up... I love my 7998 and my w7

Yup. I have a 300/2 now and the setup is designed to accomidate as many more layers of JL amps as I can fit. a 500/1 is next :)

Here is where the system stands today:
1. The shop ran out of S600s speakers, and installed S600a, now I have to take it back for a swap. Warning S600a speakers are BRIGHT.
2. The shop ran out of the 6.5" speakers I was going to put in the rear, so they put in 5.25", and I have to take it back for a swap.
3. Against our agreement, it appears that the shop did NOT run new cable into the doors, and installed the crossovers in the doors instead of in the rear where we agreed.

That said...

4. The new amp mount is pretty cool.
5. The new tweeter covers are cool too.

I'll post pics of the amp install in a second.

Here is the amp. It's a custom metal mount that attaches to all stock bolt holes in the compartment.

There are risers on all corners (hard to see in the pic), to attach another amp "layer" with the 500/1 later.

Okay, this is what pisses me off.

There was to be NO CUTTING OF WIRES. Everything stock was supposed to stay in place. An new cable was supposed to be run into the doors. They'll be hearing about this...
