I hear you on that one. I went through at least 2 different phone cords before I found one that I could strip properly. The first couple were like you described. I have a very high quality stripper (wire stripper that is) and still had issues. Even with the one that worked out for me it was not that easy becaue the guage of the wire is so small that if you don't get it just right you'll ruin it.

Suggestion I have is to to out to perhaps a Radio Shack or if you work in a place that has a computer network support or telecom group, take your phone cable to them and ask them to strip it for you. There is a special tool that they use for stripping phone wires which works MUCH BETTER than trying to strip it with a regular wire stripper.

Thanks man! I'm going to try using my teeth and see what happens. I've heard from a couple people that that's the best way to do it. I just always have 1 little tiny gauge wire left and I actually got both sides stripped down to one little wire and tried it and I'm getting no power even when I switch them. So, it's not that I have them hooked up backwards. Does it matter if the phone cord has 2 pieces of wire in it or 4? I tried both and couldn't get either to work. It seems like as long as they are the middle pieces that should be all that matters and both types of wire have them in the middle. Who knows, this sucks and I thought this would be easy!

Believe me, I went through exactly what you're going through...just read the first few pages of this thread where I start posting and you'll see what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if your phone cord has 2 or 4 wires. Make sure you check out the wiring diagram in the 2nd page of this thread. I think it's backwards though. The wires need to be making good contact also make sure your ignition is all the way to the setting before the car starts as it doesn't turn on on the first setting.

Twenty minutes to do . Used a box cutter and just lightly shaved the insulation on the phone cable till the first sign of raw wire . then just used my fingers to remove the rest .

Never mind about the wiring kit. I just went to Radio Shack and bought a phone wire plug in with the wires already stripped and with gold plated connectors on the end for about $3, . I love it.

I have folks over on the G35driver forum using my product successfully using their mirror for power. I believe the 350Z shares the same mirror. Even if you don't want to order one of my cords, please feel free to use my installation guide to give you an idea on how to DIY and the wire colors you can use to power your Escort/Valentine 1 from your mirror, provided you have the upgraded mirror that has switched power. This all started from my fellow Corvette forum members over a year ago and has since been installed on many other vehicles. Alot easier (about 1 minute installation) versus the other activities of running power cords and tying into the fuse box or other sources of switched power!

I just ordered my mount from Mike (BTW Mike, I meant to say it's the x50 not the old 8500). So the mechanicals are out of the way.

Now, on to the electricals. Does anybody know what kind of connector the auto mirror uses? If it is a molex minifit (two rows of 8 connectors). Then I can probably get those from work and make some sort of Y adapter that wouldn't require anybody to do anykind of crimping, soldering, you name it. Simply plug and play.

Can anybody get access to the pinout of the connector that hooks up to the mirror, and possible some close pictures of the connector that goes into the mirror? My roadster has the cover on it all winter, and I'm too lazy to take it out to take a closer look.

OK answered my own question about the pinout.
Only thing left is to find out the actual connector. Hmmm, I've had custom cables made before at work... wonder how good these would sell. Mike, maybe we can work something out to provide a complete solution that doesn't require any splicing or mechanical mods to the car.

Anybody who works for Nissan and understands their wiring diagram conventions please double check my understanding of this diagram.

I've been doing my research. It turns out that the Z comes with a mirror made by Gentex. I beleive the model number is 50-GENK40. I've contacted Gentex to see if I can find out what the wiring harnes part number is.

The pictures I took of the connector weren't in focus, so that's of no use.

I'll probably keep updating this thread and talking to myself once I find out.

Hey lamaz,
If you come up with a 'Y' adapter for this, I would be very interested. I spliced in to my harness without cutting into the wires but my solder job was not up to snuff. After about a year, I lost power to the detector. Mirror still works fine but I'm too lazy to redo it. Keep up the work and us posted.

Somebody that has access to Nissan information needs to help us out. I've tried calling Gentex and finding out what the part number is, they referred me to Mito Corp (distributor). Mito doesn't want to give out the info.

Gentex did tell me that the connector (or harness) is made by Sumitomo. I've called Sumitomo and have had no reply yet.

So if Nissan can give us the Sumitomo part number for Nissan 350Z Connector R4. Then we are all set.

Well, I'm close to giving up on trying to get the part number for the connector. This option isn't pretty, but it's looking alot more appealing.
