I've officially given up. I cheated and did it with my own version of the "invisicord" http://www.invisicord.com/install.html.
For those electrical gurus, I used "SL" series pins crimped to the end of a phone cable that I cut. I heat shrinked the entire cable to look black, and also heat shrinked each individual pin behind the Sumitomo connector. I'll post pictures some day.
