Radar Detectors
How does everyone have there radar detectors hooked up if the outlet is in the back. Don't know if you can buy longer cords, say at Radio Shack. Even trying to hard wire it to the fuse panel you would need a longer cord. Thanks

radar detectors
I made a mount that mounts my escort 8500 to the rearview mirror. I used the optional hardwire cord with mute botton from escort to wire mine to the fusebox. I mounted the mute button low on the dash. Enclosed are a few pic's.
I have sold a number of mounts to other forum members. pm me if interested.

Use the curly cord that originally came with your Escort or Valentine1, buy a 4 wire telephone line Coupler and a 6 foot telephone line.
Plug them all together since you're just making an extension cord of sorts; leave the coupler under the passenger seat and tuck the straight phone line wire under the center consol; leaving enough extra line hanging out of the front of the consol to reach to the window mounted detector you're using. If you buy a white coupler it's easy to see when you need to disconnect; buy a black line and you'll barely notice it as it blends into the interior's color.
I've spent the extra money on the Valantine1 [V1], got a ticket with the Escort due to it's poor K band reception. The V1 just blows away the Escort in picking up the Pa. State Police's radar traps here. I liked its performance so much I purchased another for my daily driver as well, and don't have to constantly switch it out of one car to the other. My Escort now collects dust in the box.

I had the cord installed into the wiring at the top so that I just plug it in and it sits on the visor. I was told that if it was mounted and sat on the dashboard anybody I pass would notice it easier and if they were directly behind me (under a car length) there was a chance they could block any radar hits from behind. Nobody who has passed me (when I moved over because the radar went off) noticed it, but if the person in front of me had it on their dash they did and THEN slowed down.
Only thing about the detector is it is fond of the overpasses on most of the highways in North Carolina....even when there isn't a thing visible for miles... (I live in New Jersey and visited there a few weeks ago)

(I don't know much about radar detectors) but is there a radar detector that can be run through a carputer or something, so there is no visible unit at all, except maybe a small, nodescript receiver?

Gotta be careful with the battery powered ones though. They aren't as accurate as the corded ones. You lose detection power as the batteries drain.
12yearZ: They make completely "stealth" detectors that mount in the grill up front. Only the signal lights are inside the car.

May not seem like much, but tell that to the officer as he writes you the ticket. If he targets you just after the detector cycles down, the officer has a good 4 second lock on you before you know he's ahead.
