10" Subwoofer behind Driver's seat

Yes it is possible and it sounds great! I've been reading about this topic for years on this board and decided to have a professional (Mobile Werks, Rt 46, Lodi, NJ) fabricate a custom box for my Alpine Type R 10" subwoofer behind the driver's seat in the factory location. I was going to attempt to do this myself however, I decided to leave this job to guys that do this daily for a living & I'm glad I did because the bass sounds great and they did a good job! Andy is the Owner and he delivered exactly what I wanted! These guys work on all type of high end cars so it's always fun seeing what cars they have in the shop (GTR's, Bentleys, Porsches, etc)...and more importantly if they do those cars they should definatetly be able to hook up a Z!

The bass is clean & tight and there are no vibrations. My system is finally complete (Kenwood xr-4s 4 channel amp running 10" sub bridged and alpine type r components in doors & tweeters in sail, with avic d-3 headunit). When I bought the Z I purposely opted not to get the bose system based on the reviews... so I built my system myself in stages by using write ups from this board (avic-d3 install & bypass), disassembly links, etc...

...the sub was the last missing piece that I had Mobile Werks install!

I couldn't be happier with my system. It sounds great!

More importantly it looks stock..sub faces forward (factory style).
I always wondered would the subwoofer facing the seat be a nuisance since the driver's seat is right in front of the sub but it's not.

Couldn't be more satisfied & I still have my full hatch space. Sound is crystal clear & tight!

Could you post pics of the finished install?

I'd post a picture but I opted for a carpeted finish and I'm installing the factory grille to keep the stock look.
They offered to give me a custom finish face plexi glass or fiberglass molded but I opted to keep it stock. (I'm not one for the car show scene, besides the seat is blocking it)...

Lol. If u guys want to see a pic of a 10" type r mounted in an unfinished carpeted box then so be it.
But as I said earlier, I chose to leave the stock look in lieu of a custom molded fiberglass or plexi face. Thereby I installed the factory grille over this..

damn nismozz setup looks sicker. so wat did the shop do for OP? jus make a box that fit the space?

ImWeeZzel 03-29-2011 09:53 PM

NismoZZ, could you tell me about your audio build? i want to do the same thing you did with the sub behind the divers seat.

So far I'm looking into a pioneer avh4200, but I still need to replace my door speakers, rear speakers the sub behind the driver and tweeters and possibly run an amp. I'm not interesting in running subs or rattling peoples houses, I just want something better than factory.

I don't want to spend more than 1300 with installation, thanx

I am sure it sounds better then stock, however best result in that location is a downfiring subwoofer to the floor.

ekelly36 04-03-2011 02:52 AM

yea but 300+ bucks for a box that fires down in the location is a bit high. Plus I dont really think it would make that big of a difference. I may be wrong but you would think there would be less space for the sub so I dont know .....

First off, I didn't post a finished picture because its the stock grille...so it made no since...so I took the grille off for the pic as requested in the above posts...
Secondly....I opted to save $ and not get a fiberglass finish that the shop initally offered...didn't make sense to me since it's behind the drivers seat & I'm not going to any car shows! lol

However, props to Nismozz

btw...make sure you get a quality shop for the install...it does make a difference...

I bought a setup off of a member here that fits in both cubbies, and is alittle more OEM looking. I'll post pics as soon as I get it actually in the car.

I was in the same boat. I just bought my 350Z Nismo last month and hated the audio system. Purely by luck a friend of mine ran into a guy who does installs and did his own 350Z install behind his seat. I had just listened to a guys set up in his 350Z with the Zenenclosure box and two 10s. I was considering buying the box and subs for $300. Losing the trunk space is the only reason I was still thinking about it. Then I was introduced to Matt and he let me hear his set up and I was amazed at how great it sounded. Obviously not as powerful as the two 10s in the Zenenclosure, but still great.

Matt just finished my install yesterday. $130 for 10inch sub, $200 for the amp, $60 for the wire kit and adapter and $100 for his services.

The frequencies haven't been properly crossed over yet as he is putting in a new head unit for me next week, but the sound is still great. Hard hitting bass and even the lower frequency 'droning' type bass sound good at low and high volume. Basically he walled of the space in the back to give it a more proper enclosure.
