Amped speakers cutting out, what's going on?
 

Starting a couple of days ago, my front Diamond Audio S600 speakers that are running though a JL 300/2 amp started cutting out periodically.

It first, I thought the amp might be overheating, but it actually seems like an electrical problem. Here are the symptoms:

1. Every few moments, the speakers will cut out for a couple of seconds.
2. The louder the volume, the more often they cut out (at 20, they cut out about once every 30 seconds).
3. If the engine is turned off, once the speakers cut out they will NOT come back on.
4. The LED on the JL amp stays on, the amp always has power.
5. There is no sign of strain on the electrical system (no dim lights, no drop on the voltmeter)

So it would appear that the amp isn't able to draw enough current, so it cuts off the sound, but why would it do this? Is the battery in the Z not up to task? If so, had anybody else noticed this?

I am going to talk to the shop about this tomorrow.

I had to install a capacitor to keep the amp from cutting out in my configuration. I'd also check the amp turn on lead to make sure it's not shorting out or disconnecting. Since it's volume related I'd have to guess it's the draw on the battery.

check the speakers if the wires or terminal are grounded to the door and also check the impedance of the speaker

Its gotta be the impedance. Sounds like a typical symptom of amp over current. You may want to make sure you didn't fry a voice coil giving you lower impedance. With your system off use an ohmeter and check the resistance of the speakers to the amp. On a JL 300/2 it should be between 1.5 and 4 ohms. Any less than 1.5 and you're going to go over current.

Noahbuddy is probably right. JL amps will not cut out except for undervoltage situations. The capacitor should fix it.

You may be right. I've only seen a JL amp clip once but that was when we it was run at 1 ohm. I'm not saying that overcurrent is the case but thats what it would do if it was.

Yeah, the JLs are specified down to 1.5 ohms so lower than that would cause the amp to shut off with the low ohm load light on. I highly doubt Jason's s600s are running at 1 ohm though.

I hope not...

I'm going in to talk to the shop tomorrow. I'll report back on the official problem.
