Help with Door Courtesy Lights

I want to install courtesy lights under my car doors to light up when I open the door like the dome lights.

I got these led strips and I need to wire them up. Can someone guide as to which wires to connect?

what do the instructions say?

The doors already have a light on them that turns on when the door is opened, right? (I've rarely driven mine in two years and it doesn't even have a battery in it)

If so, wire it to that.

If you want the lights in the door itself you have to run the wires through the grommets. That process is a pain and risky it is not worth it imo. I did it when i upgraded my speaker wires. Not fun. You can tap into the dome light wires if you still want to do it

I'm guessing that the wires from the LED driver are:

Red: Batt +
Black: Ground
Yellow: Positive trigger

If you search something like "puddle lights", "footwell lights", "led door reflector" or "tap into dome light wiring" then you should be able to figure out where you can connect them.

I know the red reflectors on my doors don't light up when the door is open so you'll likely need to get power from somewhere else.

How can anyone do work on wiring without a VOM, especially when you can actually buy a pretty good one for <$20?

travlee 12-30-2015 07:26 AM

but that makes too much sense, they would rather come on here and ask to be spoonfed

Yo travlee you are so depressing man. You pay a monthly subscription fee to come here and b**** people off. I wish I would restrict you from posting on my threads and not just block you from my sight.

Because clearly... everyone in the world knows they are called puddle lights? Yeah, genius?

Take your unnecessary subscription into your little corner and stay there man.

If you have a VOM poke around an find a wire that's switched 12V+ when the door is open. Isn't that what you're looking for? You might also check the schematics in the FSM. This is pretty basic stuff, no?

I think you should be able to get some power from the window switch IIRC.

I recalled seeing this thread some years ago, and the pics are gone now, but apparently this installer didn't find a switched power source in his Z:

And, some company made a kit:

Since the pics are gone in the link that dcains posted, here's a diy thread that should help with the wiring. Pics are still good. It's for light up door sills, but it seems like you're trying to accomplish the same thing with your lights: https://my350z.com/forum/exterior-an...oor-sills.html
