Playing MP3's with Bose-System. A new way?!!
 

Hi Guys!

I'm now for 3 weeks a proud owner of a Fairlady and love her. But I would love her even more if I could listen to my MP3's while driving so I thought about ways and things and came to this after reading the Nissan Service Manual:

The original Bose-System (without) Navi has an Input for the navigation system. It should be possible to wire an Ipod (or close players) to this input and listen to the music with Bose Sound without loosing the quality!!!!

I'm checking this with my dealer and Nissan Austria if it is possible and will keep you up to date.

Do what I do with my MP3 player, buy a FM modulator that plugs into the ipod - it will broadcast the MP3's at high quality to a FM station of your choice - cost is like 20-30 bucks and you can use it with any FM radio (at work/ home/ other cars ect)

I already thought about that but I only heard bad things about that fm-modulator so I dropped the idea. Can you tell me something more about how good it works in the Z?
Another problem (I wouldn't care about) is that transponders without a licence are illeagal in my country....

As for the legal issue I have no clue about your country, but its very low wattage, I doubt seriously the car next to you could pick it up. Sound quality is as good as the best radio reception ive ever had. As for bad things?!? nothing to speak of. I love mine, keep it with my ipod, goes into work with me to so I can play MP3 on my little boom box, good sound quality, ok battery life (better now that I bought a 12v plug for my car :))

Well I will wait for the reply of the Nissan Techs and will see what they say about my idea.

In worst case I have to use the FM Trans. (I must admit, that after hearing it from another my350z user the thing looses it "bad-status")
Where do you plug it in your Z? The only possible place would be the center consol....

Few ways
 

There are a few ways this is done commonly.

1) FM modulator transmitter, as mentioned above.

2) Inline fm modulator. This device works like the modulator above, but wires in to the FM antenna wire. This means it does not need to broadcast over the air and should have lower noise/interference.

3) Cassette adapter. That is what I use and the sound is better than you would expect. Since the cassette adapters have no moving parts they do not have tape hiss, etc. The downside is the thin black wire coming out of the tape deck.

As for using the nav input, my guess is that the nav input is in mono. Why bother with stereo for nav? But good luck.

If you have luck PLEASE post your results. I would love to learn of a better way to do this.

I believe that there is another port on the back of the radio to support the optional 6 disc changer on the non-bose units. If you look at an accessory guide they list the changer that fits into the mail slot. If this is still the case then i'm sure someone could engineer a way to feed just a regular audio signal like the changer would produce.

You dont plug it in to the car in any way (unless you have a power adapter in your cigarette lighter), it plugs into the headphone jack on your IPOD and thats it, it will be set to a radio station (Say 107.5) all you do is tune your radio to that station, very simple

youre right! Its been done before. You could find a place on the net that sells it if you look hard enough. I never really bothered bc I like my cd changer. But for those who dont mind loosing the cd changer option this seems like a good way to go.

Who done it before? There are no adapters known to do that. The CD Changer sends decoded data to the HU. So to use that port, you need to know what the decode key is, and I haven't seen any company offering an adapter.

Your best option is to use a cassette adapter. FM mod are not too good, you get FM quality at best.

its called ICE LINK. It was supposed to be availible for the Z awhile ago, but i dont know about now. Im waiting for the Alpine HU that allows you to connect your iPod and it will display the track/artist/song info. It's not out yet, but it seems very intriguing.

You might decide to use a Phatbox from Phatnoise.com.
It is expensive but made to interface with your stock Bose unit.

They sell a Nissan specific version that uses the 6cd buttons to control the separate MP3 play. They come in 20gb, 40gb , and 60gb. That should be enough for most people.

I have derivative of the Phatbox called a Kenwood Keg, in my Nav slot. Works great. I got an Alpine HU with an Aux In ,so no FM Modulator.

If you want to stay stock looking then you have a trade off, IMO.
You can get less expensive components and get better sound, or remain stock and pay more to stay stock looking. At this point it just comes down to dollars and you own personal preferrence.

Hey Guys,

I spoked today with the TC of Nissan Austria. He told me that the input of the navigation system will just be put through to ONE speaker. Like the prewired freespeaksystem we have.......

So I think I have to follow your guides and will buy the fm transpondern and an Ipod.
Too bad that BOSE makes such (in my opinion) idiotic prewiring.
