AMP for 2 JL 10W6's
 

I am about to get a 2 JL 10W6's setup with a custom box similar to the JL stealth box for our car, and my problem is the JL 1000/1 amp is a little too pricey for me.

I might end up with the JL 500/1, but I would like an amp thats around 800W True rms output, that will cost me a little less than the pricey JL 1000/1.

The salesperson at the shop I was at is trying to tell me that there is no good amp for what I want. He claims that anyother amp that puts out that output for a lesser price will not last me more than 8-9 months due to heat issues, etc...

What are my options?

I am in the same boat as you.

500/1 is not enough for two W6V2's.

Since the W6V2 only comes in dual 4ohm, your amp choices are limited.

You can find other amps that cost less and do one ohm (such as my NIB Tsunami DB-1100D which I'm selling for $200), however, they have a high THD at 1 ohm.

SO then the question becomes why buy a high SQ sub with an MSRP of $500, and then run it at one ohm at a high THD with some inexpensive amp?

Doesn't make sense, so you need an amp that puts out good clean power at one ohm, which means you need a regulated power supply. When you're talking quality regulated power supply amplifers, all of a sudden the JL amps become very reasonably priced!

Also, running a normal amp at one ohm constantly does put more strain on it. Your salesman isn't really lying to you on that count, but putting such an exact time limit on the failure is kind of silly. :P

Well, can a JL 1000/1 be used without having to upgrade the existing electrical system?

yes

I'm going to run a 1000/1 and 450/4 with only a yellow top optima battery. The 350z stock electrical system is apparently pretty strong.

Nazar and my local installer did recommend upgrading the ground cable to the battery though.

Awesome, now if only I can find a place around here that will give me a good quote on all of this. The people at sound advice wanted 1,000.00 for a 1000/1 JL amp.

I think the 500/1 would fit perfect for the JL10w6's

Here's a crazy thought:

I've got a single S10L7 running a 2-ohm load. I'm using one old-school Phoenix MS275. At that load, it spits out 5-600w RMS with low THD. I paid like $200 for it used on EvilBay. Buy 2 of 'em and have yourself a party. You just saved $600 on that new JL1000/1 and have one sick set-up prob. better than that 1000/1 ever would be. Obviously, I'm a bit biased 'cause I love those amps, but I still stick by it. Check out the spec's: MS275 Owners Manual You won't be disappointed. Good luck with whatever you choose!

The salesperson told me that 2 JL 10W6's were rated to hold 800w together, but could handle up to 1000w together no problem.

So for just a 1000/1 on the 2 JL 10W6's, I wouldn't even need an aditional battery, or cap?

is your enclosure going to be sealed or ported? you can also run 2 400.1.

don't need an additional battery or cap. IMO, you don't need a cap with this car.

the phoenix gold amps will kick the hell out of your w6s. My 400.1 kicked my eclipse 10s.
