Boston, xtant, & Nakamichi - Install Pictures

Finally some pictures of my trunk I finally finished (well almost) yesterday.

Components:
HU: Nakamichi CD45Z

Sub: Boston Pro 10.5LF
Front Speakers: Boston Pro 6.5

I haven't cleaned the car yet so you'll notice some dust inside. I'm going to do more damping work on the doors then do a thorough cleaning on the inside.

My overall impressions of the SQ of the system is unbelievable. I had the HU & pro 6.5s in my old Honda powered by a PPI Powerclass amp. The Pros love power and honestly I don't think at 150watts I'm giving them enough still. The Boston Pro Sub in ungodly fast and super tight. The bass is very accurate and percise and doesn't seem to mind even frequencies under 30hz (although it is lacking the power of a 12 or 15 on the really low notes). It's not a 15 by any stretch of the imagination but most people I played it for thought it was a 12.

Next steps are to upgrade the Boston Pro 6.5s to the Reference Z6 speakers and then maybe upgrade the HU to the Nakamichi CD700. I'll be posting more pictures but I wanted to get something up.

Feel free to ask any questions or make any comments. If you are in my area I'm more then willing to have you come out to my garage and hear it at any time.

Finally, high quality pictures are here:

I love music too much not to have a good setup. I choose the Boston 10 for it's very small sub enclosure (.5 cubic feet w/sub). The xtant 3 channel amp fullfills all my needs and except for a couple of pounds extra of Dynamat Extreme it's not too heavy (I actually pulled my rear speakers to offset the weight - lol). In all honesty, the weight I added to the car I should probably loose on my own personal body. Until I have less then 5% bodyfat (which on my fatass ain't going to happen) I can justify some extra weight on my Z.

Great looking sub install. Do you happen to have any pictures of the sub enclosure? Also as far as the additional weight, I guess that's why God created (or is in the process of creating) turbo and superchargers. :D

I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the sub enclosure but expect one in the next day or so. If I remember right the outside dimensions are 6.5x12x18 which left 1" of clearance from the bottom of the sub to the enclosure wall.

very nice install.

1 question though ... any grill or protection for the sub? - or do you just not plan on using the hatch at all?

I'm actually going to do two things for the sub. One is a fake cover like my amp (to hide) and one is a grill for when I do carry something in the Z (which hardly if never happens). I've got a remote gain on my sub channel just to turn the sub off for this reason. Honestly except for rare cases like NOPI I don't carry anything in the Z because it's one of 6 cars for me.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did this install + components run you about?

Install I did on my own. I spent $49 for all the material at Lowes. Add the price of Dynamat ($199 for 9 sheets - I used only 4) and it was around $250 for all the installation stuff including the sub box. Ohh - add about $5 for fiberglass resin max (I resined the inside of my box). I'll say $255 tops (and I've already recieved $70 for selling 3 sheets of dynamat extreme and still have 2 left).

All the carpeting was done for free by my shop neighbors with exchange for a stereo build in the near future. They did an excellent job (quite possibly the best I've ever seen in 15 years of custom car work) and I'd highly recommend them to anyone.

Parts:
HU: Nakamichi CD45Z - $299 (bought 3 years ago)
Speakers: Boston Pro 6.5 - $399 (bought 4 years ago)
Sub: Boston Pro 10.5LF - $249 (just got)
Wires: Stinger Platnium Series - $290 w/shipping and have a ton left (1 extra set of RCAs, about 150 feet extra speaker wire, a good 20-30 extra of connectors of various size, 1 distribution block, 1 extra fuse, 5 feet of extra power wire, 16 feet of extra ground wire)
Amp: xtant X603 - $999 (just got)
Amp accessory: Remote Gain Control - $69

Total: $2600 or so but $700 of that was bought in the past.

I've still got another $2400 of potential stuff to buy (Boston Reference Z6 & Nakamichi CD700) if I decide to go that way :).

That's the basic breakdown of prices and honestly I never thought of it total till now. Actually I figured it would have been way closer to $4000.
