My First 350ZR install :) featuring Nazar's boxes :) pics...

So...finally got my chance to do a Z roadster, this time an 04 model belonging to memeber realreamstein...

my theory with getting a good sound in convertibles is always to get more speakres upfront to produce more sound at a comfortable level...and this is no exception.

The goals of this install:

1. good sound quality, ability to hear every word smoothly and clearly with the top down on the high way

2. stealth install and save all trunk space

so...lets get started with whats installed:

headunit: Pioneer 6800 6 disc dvd changer
Front stage: DLS iridium 6.3 3 way component set
rear fill: Infinity Kappa 6.5" comp set supplied by the customer
Subs: two DLS iridium 10" subs in Nazar's roadster boxes
Amps: Customer supplied Orion xtr 900.2 powering the subs, and DLS CA23 powering the front stage, rear fill is off the headunit...

first off is the headunit isntall:

The front stage is installed in my typical fashion, with the midrange and tweeter flushed into the kick panels sealed by a little glass and dampening:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven3.jpg

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven4.jpg

and the midbasses sealed into the door and the entire door dampened, of course new wires were run into the door, no use of stock wires here :)

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven6.jpg

here is the view from behind the seat, not infiniti tweeters. Nazar's boxes are tucked out of sight, more on that later :)

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven7.jpg

moving onto the trunk. here is the view with the trunk open:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven8.jpg

and with the carpet off, you can see the stock support piece is retained to give support once again

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven9.jpg

and here is in full show mode :) the fake floor is wrapped in vinyl, with both amps flipped under plexi. t he bigger orion is towards the front witht he smaller DLS amp straddled by the four DLS crossovers. for venting purposes, there is intentionally a gap around the amp to allow air to flow and a very high flow squirel cage fan moves the air around...

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven12.jpg

at this point i want to say a big thanks to Nazar for producing these wonderful ZR boxes for the stock cubby space behind the seat. I think they are the perfect solution for getting good midbassinto the ZR. Here are some pics of the install progress:

first up we have just hte boxes:
http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven13.jpg

and here is a shot of the cavity with the neccssary panels removed, i laid down some foam dampening on the floor to reduce vibrations

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven14.jpg

here is a test fitment of both boxes, i then marked out two holes so i can use the stock bolts to secure the box

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven15.jpg

Now nazar ships the boxes usually with speaker terminals, but i always prefer to drill a hole, pass wires through and then duraglass it shut so it can never leak ro fail:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven16.jpg

and here is the front of the box carpeted, note that this isnt at all neccessary, as the box is compeltely hidden from view

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven17.jpg

here ist he box turned bottom side up, with polyfill and wiring leading out, ready for subs:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven18.jpg

and here is the DLS iridium 10" sub mounted in the enclosure:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven19.jpg

i alway use quick disconnects to make any future diagnosis and removal easier:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven20.jpg

so now both boxes are in, secured by two bolts on the bottom and two more screws on top:

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven21.jpg

and finally all the panels back in :)

http://simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/daven22.jpg

So far, it sounds great, i took a quick drive on the highway with the top down and i can definetly hear things cleanly and clearly, the bass is quite good, better even than my expectations, and there is honestly VERY LITTLE rattling, i would go as far as saying that there are LESS rattles than a Z coupe wtih say two 10s under the strut.

enjoy :)

I'm digging the mid-bass boxes. I assume there's a finishing cover.

Nice! :D

16psibrick Aug 30, 2006 02:35 PM

what cover? :) you mean the subboxes?

Nazar Aug 31, 2006 06:01 AM

thanks nazar...

just want to re emphasize, after talking with the customer a bit...

i know some of you are worried about rattles...but i can definetly assure you taht there is very little rattling going on...like i said, it produces less rattles than a typical coupe install...

I picked up the car yesterday evening. I wanted a system that sounded very smooth but it had to retain the factory trunk space. Also, the install had to be pretty stealthy (as a ZR owner I leave the top down all the time). Besides the head unit, the system is hard to tell from stock (unless you are looking for it). The DLS components don't look as special as they sound.
B, fulfilled all my install requirements and more. And those ZR boxes with the DLS subs and Orion amp....man...can they bang. I set them to +2 for extra bass, yesterday, and set off for home. I was stuck in traffic, top down, on University avenue playing an *Mp3* of a Peter Murphy song. I didn't think it was all that loud and I could see people looking around. This morning, listening to "The Streets" the bass was kinda much (so I think I will put it back down to B's +0 setting). So far, I haven't blasted it, with the top up. But top down, it sounds great *outside the car* (very little rattling).
The DLS Iridium components are velvety smooth. The Infiniti rears are only really there for when watching movies. Otherwise, it is almost entirely faded forward. All-in-all color me super impressed  :casper:

that looks really good and stealth! good job!

driftk1d Aug 31, 2006 08:05 AM

looks awesome! props to you and nazar for making a great box

BLKroadster Aug 31, 2006 08:15 AM

Great job man.. Now the Z doesnt have any compartments hehehhe. Cant use it much anyways cause u always have to scoot the passenger seat up.

Realrammstein Aug 31, 2006 08:43 AM

Personally, I *never* used the compartments. it is such a pain to move the passenger seat with the control that it was wasted space (much rather have a 2nd sub in it).:rockout:

16psibrick Aug 31, 2006 08:47 AM

someday, perhaps i can get to do a variation of this, with nazars boxes like it is, and fiberglass the front of it so the front are two amp racks...that would leave the entire trunk open and keep the spare tire :) be a bit more cash though;)

oh the ideas i get lol

B-Unit Aug 31, 2006 08:48 AM

Fiberglassing two amps would deff be a good looking alternative unfortunately the glassing would prolly add allot of weight but im sure theres lots of people who wouldnt mind sacrificing.

-B-

16psibrick Aug 31, 2006 08:50 AM

acutally, fiberglssing two amp racks would be ALOT lighter than doing a whole in trunk amp rack and fake floor install :) its the time and money that people would need to sacrifice :)

BamBam Aug 31, 2006 08:52 AM

Great looking install guys... I am sure it sounds great too..
Thanks Nazar for making these for us ZR owners. :)

B-Unit Aug 31, 2006 08:53 AM

hahah or more like...

YOUR time and THEIR money rofl!

i like cutting the compartment covers and putting plexi behind them (areas behind the seats) for amps rather than fg but thats just personal.

-B-

16psibrick Aug 31, 2006 08:56 AM

oh that would be nice, except to utlize the boxes, nothing can be behind the covers...as the boxes fit flush with the front :)

B-Unit Aug 31, 2006 09:05 AM

ohh no. what im sayin is mount the amps in the cubbies witha plexi NOT subs.

-B-

[]V[]addog Aug 31, 2006 09:33 AM

another great looking install!

jtabraham Aug 31, 2006 01:00 PM

so do the subs face the rear of the car?

Realrammstein Aug 31, 2006 01:44 PM

Actually, they fire down.
