Spike, this thread has been IMMENSELY helpful and informative. You have totally sold me on the KOS system. Unfortunately, I am unable to put down that kind of money right now, so I'm thinking expandability. First and foremost, I would like to have a touch nav system.
Would it be a wise move to go with the G510 and Kenwood touch screen as an initial investment, with the idea of adding the V500 later for expansion (possibly iPod through the touchscreen, if that's possible)?
I have an 07 Touring (Bose), and I currently have no desire to get rid of the stock H/U. Without the V500, does the G510 audio connect to the H/U?
Thanks in advance, and thanks for the GREAT thread!
Edit: Nevermind, i think i've found my answers in some of your other posts. You da man! I think I'm gonna try to go for the G510 and the LZ702W, because aside from an iPod hookup, all i'm lacking is the nav. Now i just need to find a good ipod adaptor for the bose system...

^^ Thanks for kind words.
You do have it right. If you do not want the extra expense of the Kenwood KOS system and do not need the features of a scalable system, but want a great touch-screen navigation device; your best choice is what you have decided to install: Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation Box displaying on the Kenwood LZ-702W Touch-screen Monitor.
In fact, this is a setup that THEDUKE recommends when KOS is not economically practical or necessary (and Mando knows a lot more about Kenwood products than I do).
I can promise that you will like the exceptionally fast and accurate KNA-G510 (OEM Garmin) GPS. I am also certain you will love the Kenwood LZ-702W Touch-screen Monitor since it is razor sharp (not a characteristic feature for touch-screen monitors) with exceptional color, provides great touch-screen function, and is viewable even under direct sunlight. Alpine is the only other 7” touch-screen LCD monitor that I’ve seen as a comparable.
You’ve made a good choice. You are really going to like this setup.

one last question before i begin (saving up for) this endeavor. Has there been a clean resolution to the problem that arises when installing a 7" monitor in the 07 cubby or am I going to have to do some customization? I have no problem doing that, I just couldn't find any posts from anyone that has found a clean way to do it.

^^ I don’t think it’s that hard to do.
There is plenty of room for the monitor in the upper/forward cubby. You will need to do some custom fabrication (cut-out the cubby for the screen, maybe add a trim piece if the cutout isn’t exact, and devise something to hold the screen in place). A nice touch is supporting access to the lower row of buttons on the LCD screen.
This is a simple project that any high-end shop can do. For example, this is much easier than building and “glassing” a SubW enclosure.

after reading all the old posts my minuscule mind is still confused
please help me out here
If I have...
headunit: DNX 7120 or DNX 5120
screen: LZ-702W or KOS-L702
carportal: KOS-V500
1. Do I still need the KNA-G510 navigation box even though the headunit has navigation?
2. would I be able to play my music (IPOD), navigation, movies on whatever screen i want?
(i think Spike said that the headunits with navigation can only be played on their original system and cannot be sent to different screens but I am confused.)
thank you

There are two ways to install aftermarket navigation in a Z:
--Spike
- Install an all-in-one double-din unit that supports navigation. Pioneer, Eclipse, and Kenwood are examples of companies that manufacture such a device. You install the all-in-one device in the Z’s double-din slot. The only downside of this is that the screen is low and thus not an optimum viewing angle for navigation. You cannot “shoot” the navigation image to a remote monitor (i.e., to a remote monitor you install in the upper/forward cubby).
- Install a 7” LCD monitor in the upper/forward cubby space (above the double-din) slot for optimum viewing while navigating. In this case you have the following three options:
- Kenwood KOS System: This consists of the Kenwood KOS-L702 Remote Touch-Screen Monitor, Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation Box, and a Kenwood Controller (KOS-V500 or KOS-V1000)
- Kenwood LZ-702W Touchscreen Monitor and Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation Box
- Garmin GVN53 Navigation Box plus any NTSC/PAL monitor or a RGB monitor.

The Garmin GVN 53 replaces the Garmin GVN 52 (which is the same unit as the Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation Box except that the Kenwood device supports touch screen function and the Garmin GVN units do not).
The Garmin GVN 53 provides these advantages/features over the GVN 52 (and its Kenwood cousin, the KNA-G510):
- The application software and interface remain the same, but the GVN 53 is noticeably faster than the Garmin GVN 52 (and its OEM version, Kenwood KNA-G510). New buyers will appreciate the better performance, but existing GVN 52 owners/users may not consider this worthy of replacement since the GNN 52 is more than adequate and significantly faster than any competing GPS device (e.g., Alpine, Pioneer, Eclipse, etc.).
- The GVN 53 supports RGB monitors providing an incredibly sharp image and the capability of hooking to a CarPC or just about any OEM or aftermarket CES . RGB support does require an additional adapter.
The next generation of GPS devices is really going to be great… photo-realistic street views, internet access, satellite support, etc. Sirius/XM will have a significant role here.

I agree… It isn’t easy keeping up with the quickly evolving GPS solutions. The GPS marketplace is hot these days as manufacturers continuously upgrade their lines.

Also... spike... to achieve all this with dnx 8120.. what would you need? Just the Kenwood KOS-L702 Remote Touch-Screen Monitor? DNX8120 already has built in navigation and A/V out
