DIY: IPOD plug in bracket for aftermarket HU

back story. the door on my 2004 cubby broke so i decided to replace it with a retractable one from a 2003. I figured since i had everything apart i would move the USB plug in for my aftermarket stereo.

first thing i did was replace my cubby with a retractable one from a 2003. these only fit the 03-05 section because the box changed 2006+. got mine from CZP

just unscrew the old one and use the existing screws to install. fits perfectly and cleans up the center though the color is a bit off since the 2003 was a lighter gray.

next plan for my head unit's usb was to have a plug in that looks close to OEM. i found a site that sells custom plates and USB panel plugs. the site is datapro.net. they have a section to custom build a plate,

http://www.datapro.net/cgi-bin/plate_designer

i used their square 2.5 x 2.5 plate. i followed the step by step directions you then select the cutout you want in this case you select the USB type A from the menu then you add the plug to use which is a USB panel mount A cable and that is it.

for me the 1 foot cable was long enough but you can get them up to 15 ft.

at first i tried the cubby but found that there is not room for the plug to go back there so i found a better spot. i took out the center console (rather easy, only 5 screws) and cut into the storage/drink holder area. this looks alot cleaner and alot more OEM. You make the cutout a bit larger than the usb plug itself then you use the plate to clean it up and secure the plug.

i then moved my tomtom from the side of my radio to inside the now empty cubby hole. i used the swivel mount and holder off of the proclip mount i had mounted off to the side and mounted it to the rear of the box. it is a tight fit and a pain to get right but i got lucky the first try.

the mount

tomtom in

good thing about the swivel it allows me to tilt it just enough to get it in/out and angle it to view. also with a couple test runs being in the cubby it does not interfere with GPS reception at all. in the end i ended up cleaning the look inside the car without losing anything. plus you can put the plug and cable into the cubby and still close the door. out of site, out of mind.

this set up worked good because my aftermarket head unit has a rear usb plug in. this type of setup should work with any aftermarket that has a rear USB or those with a OEM+IPOD adapter. also if you USB cord is not long enough datapro has different length USB plug cords up to 15 ft.
