Gear box fixed at last!
This is also on the main reapirs site - but you may find this a help.
Well its taken 5 visits to get the gearbox fixed. They rebuilt it at the 2nd visit (Ist they said nothing wrong!!!), then several visits as 2nd was not right (hard to change when cold). All the oher gears were reluctant as well. I finally had enough and told them to keep it until they had it right. It is ok, actually transformed, and the fix? Synthetic gear oil I'm told. I spoke to an owner who races his Z professionally (rally) and he has done the same from day 1 and has had no problems at all. What annoys me is why did they not do this from the start? The final icing was the hi pitched noise at 120 KMs (70 mph) has also gone! I strongly urge you all to change your oil asap. |
Chris, glad to hear you got it fixed at last!
What oil did they use? As always H |
I knew someone would ask - I'll ring and find out.
|
The oil is to quote "fully synthetic, VQS or something". If I get more I will pass it on.
Just got it Castrol VMX80. |
Car2 - glad to see that you finally got the car back and fixed too!
Thanks for telling us what the problem / solution is - will keep in mind for my gearbox should it ever start to play up. |
I personally would do it NOW. The hassles I've been through...
I don't think the box is quite the same after a rebuild. |
Put a Redline on ;) Work wonders on mine :D
|
WTF is a Redline?
|
Redline is a brand of oil.
|
I knew that...

Changing into second gear in my car when cold is hard (sometimes requires quite abit of effort) All other gears are fine and when warm second (although not what I would consider perfect) becomes significantly easier. I still find that grinding is an issue when going into second unlike any other gear (2nd -> 3rd is smooth all the time) and find myself shifting very slowly to try and avoid it. (note grinding does not occur all the time but I don't feel confident changing fast into 2nd.)
Having read a couple of comments about gearboxes on this forum most seem to find this normal. Any comments. (Done 3000 km so far) Tks |
ditto with mine Jagz . . 5300kms..
|
Changed to Redline synthetic gear oil 50% MTL and 50% MT90 mixure works really well, smooth shifts but it's not a cheap oil.

Whats the general opinion on when to change it and would changing cause problems with warranty etc?

What is the capacity as the Nissan manual does not say. I bought 2 of each but would like to know if this is enough before I do the change. FYI. I bought my redline stuff from Coventry Auto Parts on O'Riordan St Alexandria if anyone wants to know. It is listed for $29 per Quart and I was charged $22. |
yeap, 2 of each is fine for the gearbox, i think it's around 3.5l, you'll still have some leftover. How much do they list 75w90 for? Are you going to be changing the diff oil as well?
|
Same price for the diff. I bought 2 of those also
|
You only need 2 bottles for the diff. You'll have some left over as well. If you are doing the change youirself make sure you clean the magnetic plug from the diff, there's lots of metal shaving on it.
