I saw a photo on a thread about a year ago where the gauges were mounted in the air-con vents on the door. Can't remember exactly how it was done but it stuck in my head as being quite ingenious. From memory I think the vents still worked somehow.

My sister mounted her boost gauge on the drivers side aircon vent on her s15. It's pretty much a perfect fit so it looks like an out-of-the-factory gauge.

I don't think the aircon will still be venting properly from that vent anymore though, lol.

Or like westpak said just replace one of the gauges in the stock pod. Very stock, very nice.

Its illegal to mount gauges past the steering wheel on the A-pillar.

You can mount one in the bottom-most corner. Two if you really squeeze them in.

I would get rid of the battery gauge. Does it really tell you anything useful? The oil pressure gauge is actually useful, since you can tell when your oil is up to temperature, and thus safe to push your turbo, and if your oil gets too hot.

I like my air con vents, so I'd personally keep them. The one near your left hand doesn't really work noticably, so maybe you could cut a hole and mount it there?

The best idea would be to use the cubbyhole in the centre console. A lot of tuners stick it in there. Keep the lid and you can hide the gauges too.

As for brand, Defi are one of the best. But, they also cost a lot. I'd at least stick with a brand name - I like the look of A'PEXi gauges.

The S15 and Z Air vents are the same so if you want a perfect fit a HKS 60 mm Boost gauage will fit snug and tight with no screws. I did one for my mates S15.

Even though the autometer guages fits like above the front rim of the autometer guage is rounded where the HKS is flat and fills the entire vent. Something to think about when buying a guage (besides accuracy)

It's up to you though, what u want to use and where to put it.

My 2.2c points to the door air vent.

Regarding Battery Gauge,

Its good for showing when the battery isnt getting charge anymore and as a result of this when the car is about to die because it isnt getting enough voltage.

If you altenator dies the charge warning light will come on but your battery will still be showing charge and this will slowly go down until 10.4 or 11.4v(I forget which) then your car will die. The gauge is accurate when comparing readings from a hand held multimeter.

westpak

That is very nice, but I unfortunately need the the digital speed display it is a police state where I live and 3kph (2mph approx) over the limlt and its a ticket, bastards, I belive the OEM gauges are one complete unit (battery, oil and the multi function one) is this right ???

mchapman

I think I'd like to keep the OME gauges and maybe stick the additional ones in the Nav console, I'm still not sure the 'A' pillar this the least work but is a bit boy racer.

MR RISk

Thanks that sound good advise I'll check it out.

David,

I think you are allowed to use gauges anywhere you want and no one will think you are a boy racer, you've got a $15K APS TT and a $70K+ car to protect.

I thought about adding gauges under the door in the centre console and have come to the conclusion that they would it would look crap/cheap when it is open. A very acceptable solution would be to have a full sized LCD screen with the readouts and digital gauges being displayed on it. Is anyone making this solution yet?

Yes, unfortunately it is all together, unless you ae good with electronics and can figure out a way to cut the board and just leave the computer display one.

Amazing coincidence.
I have just finished fitting an Auto Metre boost gauge in the Z that I fitted the Stillen kit to last month.
I put it in the centre of the cubbyhole, but there is no clearance behind as the air vent ducting is just behind the back of the cubby.
If I had the time I would try & source a closely matching gauge & fit in place of the voltmeter , maybe a digital gauge to match the info meter.
With our hot summers I dont like the aircon vent idea, not to mention the extra wireing work
