RPF1s - Can't decide on width
 

Oakos Auto. is having a sale on RPF1s and I've wanted to buy a set for months. I'm trying to decide if I should buy the 9.5" or 10.5" or go staggered... I want to go square for AutoX to help eliminate some understeer, but I'm going to try and get out to track days at HPR in Colorado. Everything I've been reading says noobs should prefer understeer on the track for safety. Right now I'm running a Cusco LSD, Hotchkis Sways, Tein Flex Coilovers, Cusco A Arms, and SPC Rear Camber Arms. I'm debating on whether or not I'm going to get a turbo so that would make me lean towards a staggered setup to keep the rear planted. I am looking at the 285 RS3, 275 Star Spec, or 275 Kumho Ecsta MS. I wouldn't mind a wider tire, but no one really makes a larger tire that performs as well (unless I move to slicks)

Cliffs: Are 10.5" wide wheels to much for a 285 tire and will I kill myself on the track with a square setup...

I've been pondering some RPF1s as well, and I've got a good deal through Bridgestone/Firestone for tires. If you go to the site:

and select any type of tire, and then "sizes and specifications," it'll tell you what sizes will fit on different width wheels. I'm sure that holds across the board for any type of tire.

10.5 +15 is really aggressive and not optimal for wide tires. My next set will be 17x9.5 front and 18x9.5 rear with 275/40's all around. Basically the same i run now, just a slightly wider wheel that weights less.

Im selling my 9.5 10 setup. It does have some understeer but on tighter courses the back end still got happy.

I want to try a square setup next.. mainly because im just bolt ons and auto X...

If your going to run a street tire and do track days that may make me look at staggered.

I am also in the same predicament. I really want to go 18x10.5 all around with 285's. I'm still not sure if they will fit in the fronts. I have seen people on here running them, but I don't want to run spacers. Let me know what you decide.

Why not put 7.5 on the rear also? That way you can rotate wheels between each event. It really helps with extending tire life.

ride height issues for running redline time attack. No to mention the car seems to handle better with the proper stagger in height. I've run both setups now.

I've seen two cars run the 10.5 +15 with a 285/30 in the front without issue. You certainly don't need a spacer, but some camber and a rear fender roll seem necessary.

I will be proving (or disproving) the 10.5 +15 situation myself (see note above). On paper, they look like they can't fit, but I've seen pictures and emailed BlowmyS14 about his 10.5 +15 set-up. He ran a 15mm spacer in the rear! My hope is run a 305 rear and 285 front (though I did buy four 305s in case we could make it fit in the front as well). I have four 18x10s to make the combos work correct (one for autox, one for track) that I currently run four 295/30/18 Hoosiers on.

A 10.5" wide wheel is perfect for the 285/30-18. I'm running a 10" wide RPF1 with 285/30-18s - +22 offset square setup. I have 1/2" spacers on the front and 1/8" spacers on the rear and everything clears. Stock springs, -2 camber up front, stock rear.

We run a 18x9.5 Enkei RPF1 with a 255/35 Hoosier R6 on our race car. Great wheel, no issues!

I'm getting really sick of not being able to rotate my tires. I paid $40 a few weeks ago to switch around my tires to keep the wear even...

For those of you running RPF1s, can you post some pictures? I'd like to see how these different setups look...

I'm having problems with understeer on tighter courses right now. I think part of the problem is I'm carrying too much speed into corners which overpowers the front tires...

Sounds like too much speed in the corners (versus "carrying speed") to me. ;) If you are fighting understeer, you are ready for the square set-up.

I'd also suggest a "square" setup. I've been in quite a few cars, 350Z included...staggered and square, and I've always favored the square cars. Some of the staggered cars (mainly the F355) were just a pain to drive through the cones in anger.

I currently have 18X9 +22, 18X10+18. I'm looking to trade with someone who has 17X10+20-ish all around. Smaller tires that are square are cheaper and last longer and allow me to run softer sways in the rear which I like the feel of.

You say tomato :P I'm guessing adding a little bit of tire (width) wouldn't hurt with that as well...
