Laze1's Video and others from CMP on Saturday
From Carolina Motorsports Park where laze1, Tom L, John D, myself and a few of the other faster PTB, Thunder roadsters, and Modified Legends guys had a blast. We had the closest 5 way race I have ever been in with at least 8 lead changes and the race decided by .18 seconds. I thought I had some of the best race video I have ever recorded only to find out the Camera did get turned on like I thought. Luckily the PTB guys had their Camera's rolling. Tom can make his FFR-C very wide.
Unfortunately not everyone made it to the finish to see #42 and I side by side as we crossed the line at the checkerd with me less than 2 ft ahead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdFk6riuMnk We all had a blast, and thanks Laze for posting this up. other Videos: John D's: http://vimeo.com/31101887 Jason's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVji-2-hVxI |
You and the Z looked good out there John, and I don't care what that big red sticker on your dash says I'm still your FAN. :icon38:
|
the wiring for the fans caught on fire at Road Atlanta in August...so those "no worky" anymore...just a reminder not to let the car overhead in the paddock
and WOW did we have fun! Check this Vid out from Sunday: http://vimeo.com/31181708

If you are going to race get those fans fixed. They shouldn't be expensive from a junkyard and they aren't that hard to install.
You looked good in the video and held your line when challenged. Speed will come with more track time but the main path to speed is smoothness. You looked good in the conrner and his your apex well. |
Good stuff, what is done to the Z as far as the motor goes? That redline sounds really high, and the mid range power sounds much more peppy than my car.
|
 Junk-yard 80k motor out of a automatic trans 2005 Z ...no mods other than a tune, plenum spacer, running stock rev limiter RPM and pump gas. I have HR OEM headers into test pipes into a 4 " single pipe with a Supertrapp muffler. I do run 4.10 gears...I have a certified NASA dyno run of 250 WHP...the old Engine was 265 WHP...and it had 4 years of racing on it and would turn 7500-8000 with no problem (trick heads/valves/springs/mucho forged internals...sweet sorta-stock GTM-built engine)
I run the Supertrapp muffler only at one track...Roebling...but I didn't remove it for CMP because I was too LaZe1. So you MUST wear ear-plugs without it. But I wear them all the time now to save whatever hearing i have left. BTW: I buy my used motors and stuff from Danny @ Nissan Unlimited...a Forum Sponsor. Very kind words from a guy who has seen a lot of race vids and drivers...THNX! :icon38:
And I agree that smooth is fast...and it also wins races, One mistake and you can throw away a full race of fast laps...as can be seen in my failed "Hail Mary" move on Saturday. (no Marty, I did NOT close my eyes and stomp the gas) It has taken me about 6 years starting in HPDE1 to get to this point. I now get very even tire wear. A few years ago the tires looked like a grinder attacked them . Now My tires just lose speed, but still have good tread left...just all the "goody" is gone. Yep, need to fix the fans. The PO had some huge aftermarket fans, wiring, and Radiator installed. They also added extra wiring and relays that provided for a manual over-ride switch AND the OEM fan control also worked. So you could manual turn the Fans on/off, and so could the OEM controls. I haven't decided whether to just manual or go back full stock...but have purchased a OEM Fans w/Shroud to replace the giant fans if I decide to go that way during the winter re-build period . Water temps are not a problem. Oil temps are a different story... Anyway, the home-grown wiring melted last August in 100 deg temps..again too LaZe1 to fix it as I just don't let it sit and idle after it initially warms up. BTW: the NASA PTB track record @ CMP is held by the PO in this same car @ 1.48.77. The car at that time had a GTM built engine with a "little bit more power" :icon38: My fastest lap this weekend was 1.50.67 on used tires (2 race weekends old R6 HoHos) I think with new R6s I can run low 1.49s in similar conditions ( mid 70s, cool dry air, sunny)

Wow, its gotta be the 4.10's, it just seems yours has a lot more pep through the mid range. What clutch/fw you running? |
Carbonectics 2 plate CF Clutch and PP...plus I get on the gas pretty early...I believe that is the key to real speed
...and corner speeds ...and breaking ...drafting

Sundays race from another 350z of John Davidson...I am in the silver Z on the right side Pole...

John did a great job holding me off for 2 laps.

hey, some free advice..rebuild your front brake calipers...I bet that will help you with the lock-up problems.
Oh, and you didn't catch me :icon38: |
I was talking about John D...wow you sure are vain.
;) The Calipers are in great shape, its the fact there is no brake balance in the car. 99% of the braking is being done by the front, and of that most seems to be handled by the right front because of weight distribution. The car can use a lot more setup. Over the winter we will add a brake balance system, probably a dual master setup. this was a set up/learning year. Think it went pretty well, the car handles sweepers and low speed turns like a charm and we can really put the power down in second and third despite being on street tires. Once we get the brakes dialed in it will be a national competitor....maybe. |
correct & correct

you will be surprised...unless the piston is free...they are hard to modulate...yank the piston a coat it in caliper lube...if the piston provides ANY significant resistance when you push it back....yack it out, clean and coat it...Gar-ron-teed to improve your situation (brake modulation)
How is your brakes pads wearing? even all around? I bet the right one is wearing more and un-even side-to-side on the right this is the problem I had with rear brake lock-up...even with ABS... |

agreed!

Could be, but the scales showed the corner weights off by quite a bit when we had to weigh in at CMP. That will also cause the same issue. remember that the brakes in these cars are not factory units and we have to make all the adjustments ourselves. I just haven't taken the time it really needed to do it right. I spent this year figuring out the basic driving dynamics of the car and adjusting it.

good vids of John D and Marty racing again...
I blew this race completely...I "check-out" on Marty and John...then mistakenly pull in one lap short :( http://vimeo.com/m/31334163 |
