Looking for guidance for Aero

Hi All,

I am currently racing a 2004 350z with 252whp/248wtq. F/R spring rates are 10k/6k (true coilovers) and the car weighs ~3050 wet with me in it.

I am running 255/40/17 square on semi-slicks.

I currently have no aero on the car and am looking for a wing. Since my hatch is carbon, chassis mount is my only option.

What are the best track-specific options for me?

Battle aero has off the shelt chassis mount stand options, but they look disgusting (imo) and you may run into issues with it protruding too far from the bodywork depending on the org. I dont know if their wing elements are actually vetted.

Nine lives racing has an affordable aluminum 2d cfd tested wing that is gaining in popularity, although it is low surface area it may not be a bad thing. They also have a custom chassis mount option upright on their website, but personally I would find a local machinist/fabricator.

Kognition, APR and both SoCal. Then there are a few other places that offer quality wings and chassis mounts

The answer depends on which sanctioning body and class you're road racing this Z in?

NASA TT4 the ST4

Dont mean to hijack but has anyone heard anything about Big Country Labs wings? The price point is intriguing.

Before buying anything for your time trial Z, I'd try to find an aero expert to narrow down your needs. You don't want a huge wing that provides too much downforce and drag, but it must be balanced with whatever aero bits you have up front. There may be some NASA racers who fit the bill, and there are certainly some in SCCA. Whatever you do, I suspect a race shop that specializes in fabricating what is needed will be involved.

I am kinda in the same boat. I know nothing but have been slowly teaching myself. One interesting video to watch is this:

My question for some that are more experienced, is a larger portion of downforce in the rear more desirable? My mind leads to think a 50/50 distribution or maybe a slight rear bias would be preferable. If that is the case, would a smaller wing be efficient if more front downforce can't be achieved (TT4 for me, canards aren't allowed).

Also, how much of an improvement would a full Nismo aero kit help. i.e. full version 2 or version 3. I figured with those they were all designed by Nismo who have more resources than a lot of the aftermarket. I also figure if one were to do a V2 bumper, it may be smart to do the full V2 kit assuming they were all designed together, they probably work better together.

That question is vehicle and track specific. It is best for you to start where your instinct tells you and adjust from there based on how your car feels on any given weekend. That is the beauty of an adjustable wing, you can always add more. And as Sasha's testing illustrated, starting with a low drag 2d wing isnt a bad idea. Our low power DE TT4 cars will be especially sensitive to drag depending on the track. Not to mention tire sizes, compounds, heat cycles, spring rates, etc etc will all affect what optimal means for your setup.

Havent heard anything, but that design looks super high drag...probably super high downforce as well. Looks like a high power drifter style wing to me.

I am talking with 9 Lives Racing right now. They will build me a wing that will mount to my floor through the hatch. I just need to take some measurements for them before I get a quote. Hoping it is not going to be something crazy expensive since it is "custom."

The battle aero kits are $900, but I would rather go through the hatch.

Good deal, keep us posted.

Hey guys... just dropped off my car at RHR Performance (AJ Hartmann) for a little R&D. He is using my car to see if he can developed a viable/functional wing (and possibly) splitter package. Should be done by mid October. I'd give him a call and see what he says. Ask for AJ. No question he is the place to go to (or at least talk to) before doing aero mods.

Is AJ going to develop a set of canards for the car?

Actually he did ask to use my bumper to develop them to which I obliged. Unfortunately I wont be able to use them in ST4. :/

03threefiftyz 09-25-2018 04:23 AM

Nismo bumper or regular?

They look functional... Do you know if those will fit in to 2006 bumper?

Yup... everything RHR Performance makes is 100% functional. Race car aero is what they do. Not sure if they fit the '06 but give AJ a call at 609-217-8079. If you are gonna call today I'd wait till the afternoon as he getting back from a race weekend at Watkins Glen.
