Wrapping Hood
 

I would like to wrap the hood of my 350z. I have no experience doing such a thing but I have looked up videos and have been told by one of my friends who wrapped his own Mazda pickup truck that it isn't a difficult task. I understand that it will take time and patience, but that won't be an issue. I would like to know if anyone could give me some advice on the best way to wrap the hood, along with where I could get the right amount of wrap to get the job done. Any and all advice will be much appreciated!

Since this will be your first wrapping job, estimate however much wrap you need and then double it.

Clear Coat
 

So I have everything I need and tomorrow I will be going over to a friends house to get the job done, but we are not entirely sure whether or not to apply a new clear coat to the hood. The current clear coat on my hood is chipping away in certain parts so we are going to sand the hood down to the aluminum and after we do that we will place the vinyl wrap over it. Should we apply a clear coat on the sanded down hood or no? Any and all feedback will be much appreciated!

I'm not sure about clearing over.......but I would sand down everything so you can not feel any variations in the surface. Then take a scrape of vinyl, apply over a small area of your concern, squeegee it down. Then remove it to see if it picks up any layers of the paint/primer/clear areas you sanded.

I suggest doing this as chances are you will be re positioning the vinyl as you wrap. Maybe not so much on the hood....... I have tried to wrap over filler and it was a mess. Not only did imperfections show but the vinyl picked up small bits of filler which REALLY made that area suck.

I have been trying to get a fiberglass trunk smooth. Have been using the Eastwood 2K polyester high build primer and then epoxy primer they sell in rattle cans. Thought I had it. Laid some scrap down and saw half the trunk was still not smooth enough.

The hood is pretty easy. But make sure the surface is as smooth as possible. It will definitely show every imperfection. I wrapped over filler I used to fill in rock chips and didn't have any problems. But I didn't lift it up and reposition a lot either.
