Centric, What's the deal?
 

I'm looking into cost effective options for a bbk set up and I came across these Calipers from Centric. They appear to be larger than oem and Im trying to figure out if they are re-manned version of stock Brembo's?

Well from that picture they are def not the brembo calipers. Looks like they are the standard rear caliper found on non-brembo cars. For a budget BBK setup theres not much else out there that can beat the price of a well sourced and cheap OEM brembo setup and throwing in a 2-pc OEM rear rotor.

Just got to keep searching the market place and ebay!

Here is an interesting deal on some Hyundai Genesis brake calipers, its kind of a mystery though on their dimensions as there is not a lot of info out there. I can find caliper dimensions as listed below, but not rotor width and I'm not 100% on the rotor dimensions.

I may have listed the wrong picture, but i'm still under the impression re-manned brembo's are available for cheap however you can't specifically tell from most of these sites what the product looks like.

Looks like a OEM brake caliper. Do you need calipers?

Thats a generic photo and the part number referenced is for the non-track model sliding calipers. Centric does not offer replacement calipers for Brembo equipped track models.

Like mentioned in post #2.........well sourced brembos are your cheapest route.........i got my brembo's from the junk yard for $475......some idiot decided to crash his purdy Z so i got his brembos...

Yep - got mines from a BBK upgrade from Brembos...$500 bucks (w/rotors, pads, lines, and all the hardware).. The deals are out there peops! :thumbup:

The 03 Z is about 8 years old if theres a cheap way to get a bbk its already out there, but wht people would wanna go cheap on probably the most important safety aspect of the car is beyond me. ive tried upgrading to 06 brakes and considered 300zx turbo calipers all around(which would down grade prerformance but upgrade looks) if you want cheap stick to ebay, megan, ksport, akebono or try the wilwood diy

rockauto.com has Centric semi-loaded (full hardware, no pads) reman brembo units for $110-each rear (+$100 core) and $157-each front (+$125 core). For a super small increase in price you can get them with Centric Posi-quiet pads, like litterally $3 more each caliper. That would be a good deal to get started and then upgrade pads later.

You could try to return your standard brakes as a core, but someone somewhere along the line would get wise to it, so you may just end up eating the core charges anyway.

Call rockauto first, I just checked via online and it gave some excuse about not having them available. They might not be available anymore.

Otherwise, keep your eyes peeled in the my350z.com used section for used brembo sets or even used BBKs.

One of our sponsors sells the Akebono kit for the 350Z. Impressive performance. Reasonable prices.

The akebonos are ok, but they are very large and very heavy calipers and might only be benefitial as brake upgrade with two piece rotors because again they are big and heavy. I think the Akebono is a great wheel filler for those looking for a BBK look moreso than a track improvement. Not to mention they are a little harder to stuff under 17" or 18" wheels.

For less money, the OP could put together a rebuilt OEM brembo setup with racier pads, SS lines, race fluid and two piece rotors.

^ Akebono's aren't as good for the track? What are the differences among brands(stoptech/akebono/brembo) assuming the same sizes and 14' Rotor?

the Akebono's are best suited for filling out big wheels on a budget - their on track performance is sub par (Brembo's are far more capable), they are literally boat anchor-heavy, and there are few pad choices for them. Not what I'd pick if the ebst braking performance is desired, but a good choice if you primarily want the look of a big brake kit

the Stoptech kits are far lighter, stiffer caliper, and virtually an endless array of brake pad choices, plus replacement parts (replacement disks for example) are quite reasonable among the big brake kit offerings

Your only answer is oem brembo's. These are readily available and pricing is
competitive. I've procured full f/r sets w pads/rotors for <$1000 and I know
for a fact my buddy scooped same for $700!

Don't try to cut corners past this as you'll surely fail to achieve anything past
what the oem brembo's deliver w/o any upgrades.

You could try to do something silly like purchase r35 brakes and put them on
your car, but that would be pretty ****ing stupid too from what I've heard.

If I go with a better kit, is it possible to do it in two phases? Can the car be tracked with bb front and oem rear or would that be asking for trouble?

I was actually going to mention that as a solution, but the short answer is technically no.

If you go with Stoptech for a front BBK for your standard brake-350Z, it will be designed to be balanced with the standard rear caliper/rotor combo you have now. They make a different front kit from my understanding for brembo equiped models and then they make another different kit if you do a 4-wheel bbk. They do it that way because they stress balanced brake systems, not just slapped together calipers with incorrectly sized pistons. And then on top of all of that they have some different rotor sizes, one set to fit stock and 17-in wheels and another for 18-in or bigger wheels.

So if you wanted to piece together the front and rear seperately, it might come at a slight cost of true performance until everything is matched up properly.

You could probably still go with a stoptech brake kit up front that matches your OEM rear caliper and still have a great braking system. You would just have to pick the right pad for the rear and some SS lines and you'd be golden.

It is the same setup on the 350Z and G35 from my understanding, you just need to get 350Z specific rotors I think.

The StopTech front BBK can be installed alone with a rear kit added later with no issue. The front kits are designed with the stock rear brake system in mind while the rear kits match factory brake torque to maintain the bias dialed in by the front kit.

absolutely YES, if you choose the right kit in the first place - many would argue you don't need a rear BBK at all. To this day, I still don't have one, and have no plans to get one
