Z's tail wag? help

when I get up over 85 mph my rear end starts to sway back and forth, not a lot but enough that if I go any faster I get paranoid. Anyone know what might cause this? Thinking maybe the swaybar bushings? The car came with Hotchkiss springs and thats the only mod I could see in the suspension.

Wet or dry roads? When was the last time you had your alignment checked?

briankyle97 Mar 6, 2011 03:47 PM

Dry roads, with slight crosswinds (5-10mph?), Just got the car a few weaks ago and don't know about the alignment. I'm waiting for spring time to get new wheels then align. I can see that the rear camber is off a bit though

for your wheel alignment try firestone tires they have a life time warranty on wheel alignment(at least here in ca, not sure about your state though, call and find out) pay one time fee and go back as many times as you wish, i bring mine in 2-3 times a year i think its a pretty good deal and i paid $150 two years ago it was a x-mas promotion. the price might be slightly high now.

wheels are balanced? check the torque on the wheel lugs.

Agree. Improper toe will make the rear end wander.

briankyle97 Mar 6, 2011 04:38 PM

wheels are definitely balanced, and I'll see in the morning about the torque on the lugs.

Wondering if bad shocks could also come into play here also?

Before I swapped out my front end bushings with SPL's at the compression rod, and Whiteline's for the lower control arms; my car was very "loose" feeling. I could have sworn it was coming from the rear end, but after I installed the new parts and got to the alignment rack, the rear toe wasn't out all that much. However, the drivers side inner lower control arm bushing was completely torn, and both of the compression rod bushings were shot. Now, just off that fix, my car is nice and stable and tracks straight.

Shocks, struts and bushings. Any slop in the system can show up as an oscillation.

Thanks for all the replies, come to find out I had a slight dent on the rear drivers side rim. Got it balanced and was fine going about 96mph this morning around 4 am until a state trooper pulled me over! Let me go after I explained the situation and I'm sure being in the service didn't hurt, close call!
