Default Buying stuff from "Private Classifieds"... security issues

I see a lot of trading going on in this section. I have a question how do you ensure to prevent fraud.

A lot of people use paypal - buy they do not necessarily cover "private transactions" (without using ebay). And if they do cover it is up to $1,000.

The other thing is the bank. Making a fraud claim can be a pain... and can take as long as a few months to get your money back.

The best (safest) way would be to pick up stuff on your own... but what if you need to have it shipped?

Thanks.

Well if the seller has low posts then i would be leary. Try to work out a deal where you pay half up front, then the rest upon delivery. Of course the seller has every right to worry about security issues as well.
Good luck

I have about $12,000 worth of transactions here on my350z ... maybe more. As a seller, I am always more than willing to set up escrow or whatever at the buyers expense to make them more comfortable with the purchase. As a buyer, I am more likely to go and get things in person, and just deal cash, but I would not hesitate to pay the escrow fee if it was a cross-country deal.

To avoid fraud ... use escrow ... simple, relatively cheap, and safe.

Good advice. Also, I usually go back and read all of the sellers old posts. Have they been around for a while? Are there posts about the item they are selling? Do they go to local meets? Are they willing to provide extra information and pics if requested?

I have bought and sold a few things here and never had a problem. This includes some high $$ items like Volks and even a used 350Z. You could still be scammed but if you do your homework it really reduces the risk.

also, for smaller transactions, use US postal service money order and shipping. If it becomes a fraudulent case, this would be consider a federal offense (mail fraud).
like everyone said, use escrow for high dollar amounts.

Default Be Carefull

I am a police detective and have handled a lot of identity theft cases. This is the fastest growing crime in the United States per the FBI. I had one where suspect/s used stolen credit cards to make tons of purchases on E-bay through paypal. The victims gave him great feedback until Paypal yanked the money out of their accounts months later after they found out the credit card #'s had been stolen. To this day it still shows lots of excellent feedback for the theif on E-bay. There is a lot of fine print to read in those E-bay/PayPal contracts and the most important is they can yank the cash out of your account for just about any reason. Use caution.

With any transaction, fraud is always a possibility.

But you take into consideration that the seller has been on this board for some period, have satisfied customers, and would be willing to go the extra distance to make you a satisfied customer to help you make the decision.

I have bought and sold on all 3 forums. All of transactions worked out great. If someone rips me off for $100, then I would feel sorry for them since anyone that is hurting that bad for money must be in really bad shape! Anything expensive has to be local or a prominent member on the board
