Best ET's Someone Has Run With Stock Auto

I want to know what I should except to run at the strip with a Auto tranny with a dual exhaust. I keep hearing people doing crappy runs with the auto's, but I know that you could run better runs then that if they would just shift it right in manual mode. Are there any stock AT's that have ran high 13's without slicks? Going to get torque converter first before I go to the track, so I will see how that works out.

I did 14 flat when I first got my car and hadn't done any mods yet.

Did you do anything special to get that time? Such as having only an 8th tank of gas, changing tire pressure, taking out your spare, etc...

spare was out, lowered tire pressure to about 26 and of course TCS off.

Do you think it is possible for a Z with a exhaust that is auto could ever break into the 13's. I think I have mastered how the manual mode on the Z works. I have got it down so good that I have beat cars on the street that I throught would take me easily. I have a perfect launch so far with no spinning, just a little chirp and then I am off. I know that I could probably still get better at shifting and at the track would probably be a whole different story since you are under pressure the whole time. I guess the only way to know is to actually take it to the track and run it. THanks

See my sig.. As you know manual mode is definitely quicker. Just shift at 6600rpm. The fuel cut off is 6900. I did hit the cut off on the 13.9 run. 13.8 wouldve been possible. I see you have 19s. Thats going to slow you down.

Z ELIMINATOR Dec 6, 2004 06:36 PM

How do you get these times with a stock Z My stage two stillen 5 AT run 13.84 on stock tires? What rpm do you lanch from in first gear ? What rpm do you shift from in first gear ? Tell me more about yout runs >

johanna1 Dec 6, 2004 08:44 PM

I know they will slow me down alittle, but am hoping I will it 13's with them. What rpm did you launch at, and what rpm were you at 1st gear.

I can't believe you only ran a 13.8 being superchargered. Auto or not you should have ran better then that. Did you powerbrake? Did you cut off the VCS? Did you use manual mode? What rpm did you launch at? Was this your first time?

JonsilvZ Dec 7, 2004 04:44 PM

I launched it at 1200rpm. With a 2.0 60ft. I shifted at 6600 each gear. 1/4 gas TCS off but with the spare and jack in! It was at Atco NJ conditions were 55degrees and calm. Like I said with your 19s its going to slow you down. Dont expect to get in the 13s even with a CAI,exhaust. I know who has the same 19s and mods ran a best of 14.2

Yes, the 19's will slow you down. I run 17's. I'm not entirely stock, see sig, but very lightly modded. I turned a 13.903 three weeks ago and that was with me hitting the rev limiter in 2nd gear. I think the car is capable of 13.7?? easily. The F/I Z's there were turning 13.1-13.4.

One, Louzer on this board did a 19. after making three (3) complete 360's when he hit second gear. Fortunatly the Z next to him was behind him enough to be missed......he turned a 20.

Do you think that the upgraded tires would kinda even itself out with the added rotational mass and weight of the 19's compared to stock tires?

BTW did you power brake when you did the 13.9? thanks.

DIE DIE Dec 8, 2004 03:22 PM

wow I'm impessed that stock auto's have broke into the 13's.!! Most cars I've driven that are triptonic, are slower if you try to shift them. :D

Good luck man! You aren't gettin in the 13's with those 19"s tho :( Not without another mod or 2

I had serious traction problems with the stock tires. These pilot sports are great, but you have to heat them up first. I have run only 26# of tire pressure, I haven't tried anything else yet. I have had a bunch of 14.0's and can run 14.1 without even trying, but the traction thing has kept me from hitting 13's until recently.

Even if you have sticky 19" tires, I think it it still a lot of stuff to get going. My wheels weigh 20#, not the lightest, but lighter than a lot of wheels out there.

I do a burn out in the water pit to heat the tires up. The better the burnout the faster I go.

I power braked it at 2000 rpm (with the brake fuse in) TC off, shifted in manual mode at 400 rpm before redline. It runs up to redline while I'm shifting. I'm still trying to find the closest shift point to redline without hitting the rev limiter.

Had 1/2 tank of gas and all th stuff in the trunk.

IMO any Z can run a 13 with the right kind of tires or street slicks.

MMC Racing Dec 11, 2004 06:30 AM

Full weight, a little over a 1/4 tank, completely stock, left off idle, let the car shift - 14.33 @ 96. This was my wife racing it in 70+ degree weather. I didn't run it down the track this year.

She had a 2.3 60ft on that run. So a harder launch could have put her in the 14.1 range easy.

My wifes ran 13.87 best when stock on factory tires at Houston Raceway park. It's an auto and she left it in auto. She almost ALWAYS beat all the stock 6spd Z's that were showing up. Normal times for her were in the 13.9's-14.1's

She's in mid 12's now with ATI S/C and a bunch of bolt-ons and she has to shift in manual because of the horsepower induced slip causing the rev-limit to kick in before the shift is finished if left in Auto Mode.

Reflash for rev-limit should correct that .

Automatics to me seem to always do better if allowed to do their own thing/ tiptronic/manumatic is just a playpretty in my opinion and is terrible for consistency.

Afull manual valve boby would be a different thing though.

I knock about 7/10ths off using the manual mode.

JonsilvZ Feb 24, 2005 04:24 PM

Manual mode revs to 6900rpm. Left in auto shifts at 6600.Which alows a faster time and trap speed. Its about .3 sec quicker in MM.

wfcall Feb 25, 2005 04:07 AM

Good info, didn't know about the higher limit in manual.........maybe she just can't shift it right... lol

I just came back from the my first 1/4 drag strip runs (ever) at Sacto raceway.

I ran a 14.42 (best time) .... I used the manumatic mode, TCS Off and 3/4 full of gas. We have nearly the same mods..
