Why's the NSX faster?

Came across a cool site comparing sports cars. Then, looking at the NSX, it has 290bhp & 224lb-ft. Weighing the same as a Z, but having (little) less HP and (much) less TQ, why would it be faster? Is it the gearing or something that makes considerable difference?

Woops, here's the web link: http://www.allfastcars.com/acura-nsx.shtml

Great gearing and powerband. The redline at 8000rpm, and make peak power IIRC at 7800rpm's, they are beasts on the highway given the hp/weight.

350Zenophile Sep 19, 2006 09:48 AM

Agree with above...Also consider the weight of the engine is over the rear wheels which will improve traction from a standing start.

Cux350z Sep 19, 2006 10:18 AM

and less drivetrain loss too. but at twice the the price, you cna make a z faster for less.

deezz Sep 19, 2006 10:21 AM

same reason the GTO is way slower than the C6. Even w/ the same engine.

Info from an '05 NSX dyno:
Stock
WHP: 247.4 @ 7200
TQ: 194 @ 5400

I/H/E
WHP: 266 @ 7500
TQ: 197 @ 6500

I/SC/H/E with ~5.9 PSI boost
WHP: 336.3 @ 7700
TQ: 236 @ 7000

They're close stock to a Z in terms of WHP. But they have a bit less TQ, but that doesn't seem to matter much. lol

Armitage Sep 19, 2006 12:35 PM

Those stock numbers suprise me. I was under the impression they were underrated and dyno'd higher than that.

97supratt Sep 19, 2006 01:42 PM

NSX's are lighter, have less drivetrain loss, better gearing, better weight distribution, more aerodynamic, and are very very cool. :)

Miko Sep 19, 2006 08:03 PM

Yeah, definately looks like a quality design. For the price though, they need to double the HP (IMO). But hey, it's Honda; what can you expect :icon17:

Thanks for taking the time and clearing things up fellas; I appreciate it.

Ehhhhhh...... I love the NSX but....for the money it aint worth it. Yeah the car is fast, looks like sex feels:naughty: But all in all I think the Z has the ability to stomp a nsx givin' the right mods:icon38:

those can't be normal numbers.

I have seen at least two different 98' or newer NSX's at the track run 12s trapping 107-109mph with no mods and just drag radials.
They weigh around 3000lbs. They need like 260-270 whp to run 12s.

Of course, pre 98' NSXs were much slower and are on par with the Z

Very impressive machines, but not worth 80k dollars.

If I could pick one up for 30 grand I'd be there in a heart beat though.

ihatepotholes Sep 19, 2006 09:57 PM

they r highway monsters (with bolt ons)... will slaughter any n/a Zs out there on the expressway

Aluminum body? o.O

97supratt Sep 20, 2006 07:36 AM

Yes it has a aluminum hand built body, titanium connecting rods, very nice weight distribution and it looks like a damn ferrari. It's the japanese ferrari, and considered an exotic. If every exotic cost 40k they wouldn't be considered exotics anymore. Hand built anything isn't cheap, labor is expensive and so are the rare parts used.

AMen ---- side by side the Z doesnt stand a chance in the looks dept either :icon11:

Most used examples are 25-60K depending on year/motor/options

For 35-40K I would buy a 98+

My friend has a newer one and its sick :icon11:

Armitage Sep 20, 2006 11:30 AM

Not to mention an oil change only costs $21 at your local Honda/Acura department... LOL. Oh and its one of the most reliable exotics ever made.

+1 most of the 91's you see on the street have over 100k miles without any problems.

givin the NSX the rights mods will stomp a modded Z both acceleration and handling

the reason why the NSX is faster is because us Z owners have to drive with the extra weight of the bras and panties thrown at us by female drivers. :icon38:

Nihilation Sep 26, 2006 06:43 AM

My 91 NSX ran 14.0 @ 104mph with an RM intake and ZTek catback. It had 90k miles on the 3.0L 5-speed with the horrible gearing(1st gear to 45, 2nd to 82mph, 3rd to 120)... the car didn't move until you were over 60mph. From a highway roll I would creep away from stock C5 Vettes.

The night before I sold the car I raced a stock C5 Z06 from a light. At 60mph he had me by a car length, and he slowely pulled another one by the time we hit ~120...
