when i removed the spare tire, i found the car's handling very different. it was so easy to spin out and fish tail on a straight line heheh. however, the care did feel quicker..

so the question is, although the car does feel peppier when losing some weight, shouldnt you lose it in the right areas so as to not throw off the balance of the car?

Get an alignment. 1/4in. toe in on the back will fix that problem right up.

Mass weight loss under optimum cirumstance should be accompanied by an adjustable suspension so you can tune for the weight loss. I cannot run such a suspension and also have very limited means of reducing weight. But I have dropped 150 lbs out of the trunk and with an alignment I was able to tune the car to be very neutral for auto-X. If I had an adjustable suspension I could just lower the back a little to balance the weight out but I don't.

^Agreed. You can lose all the weight you can, and then corner weight the car to maximize the effieciency of the lost weight on the car so it remains neutral.

interesting.. do you know if wheel spacers might help? ie: bring out the front/rear tires closer to the fender?

Back from the dead. I got my z weighed with 1/2 a tank and it came in at 3049 pounds. Not bad considering I have a roll bar with padding, 14" rotors front and rear, and a nitrous kit I should be under 3K in a few months when I get a Ti exhaust and remove the factory side mirrors, front speakers, and passenger air bag.

track brake calipers weigh much less than standard ones. the rotors weigh a little more.

My track Z weighs in at 2350 with 1/2 tank of fuel and driver, but its a 73

Engineers from Novidem, a supercharger company in Germany drilled lot´s of holes in the front metal-bumper (behind the front bumper) which looks like a swiss cheese now. Anyway, 1,5 kg (!!!) less. This car is mainly used for Track use (Strosek 350Z-R (www.strosek.de).

is that 1.5 kg or 15 kg?

not sure what a 1,5kg is

I'll look into that too

1kg = 2.2 lb

hell you could just remove the front bumper.....

Well 3,3 lb ... you got it
Every little piece counts on these cars.

Then safety is still there ! But removing the hole structure, wouldn´t be the best idea...

Damn Rick, you're hardcore. Have you removed the power steering and AC yet?

So how does this add up to 80lbs total weight reduction?

350Z Wheels Standard 17" Alum Alloy
F-17x7.5 + Bridgestone RE040 225/50R17
23.259lbs + 28lbs = 51.259lbs x 2 = 102.518lbs
R-17x8 + Bridgestone RE040 225/50R17
24.140lbs + 29lbs = 53.14lbs x 2 = 106.28lbs

102.518lbs(F) + 106.28lbs(R) = 208.798lbs

208.798lbs - 162lbs =46.798lbs

Not calling you a liar b/c I haven't weighed the stock wheels myself...47lbs is still nothing to sneeze at, just want to make sure our numbers are accurate here. Your numbers would indicate the stock 17' wheel/tire combo weighs an average of 60.5 lbs/ea.! Is that right?

b.t.w. wheel weights are from here and tire weights are from here.

removing the power steering is tempting

get like 8 more whp, lose 20 lbs up front, 1 less thing to overheat, better steering feel at speed, etc

but I'm not so sure about daily driven. It might get annoying as hell

might be worthwhile if the car has some huge weigh savings since the less it weighs, the better the steering will feel

I'm kinda curious about relocating the battery to the rear of the car for the sake of better balance and rear traction.

I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet. I know it'll ultimately weigh the car down more overall, but balance and rear grip would improve

That was always a worthwhile trick with the 'Stang crowd since Ford places it in front of the driver side tire, but I doubt it would have much effect on the Z when it's already so close to the center axis. Save yourself the trouble and just go with a lightweight version. Makes you wonder what else could be relocated back there. That's one thing they got right with the Corvette...locating the transmission in the rear for better weight distribution.

well it's pros and cons. The more weight up front makes it easier to transfer the weight to the front when braking and turning, so handling improves with more weight up front...to a point

less weight up front, and more in the rear adds some oversteer too
