4.5 liter swap

Has anyone heard of the new G35 4.5 liter V8 motors for sale yet
Also if this motor will fit in a 350z with stock mounts?

I think the motor you are thinking of is in the M45....and no it has not been tried but was contemplated months ago. :icon44:

how much power does that motor put out..?

subdriver 05-13-2005 10:18 PM

I heard something like 355.

palmerwmd 05-14-2005 09:09 AM

340 w/ 330 lbs-ft in 03/04 guise a bit less hp in 06 version

Anyone ever considered what adding a 4.5L V-8 would do to the weight balance of the Z?

dubiez 05-14-2005 06:43 PM

just curious

Just wondering if it was worth the trouble of swapping out the motor.
I thought it would be cheaper and more reliable then FI

ZRAYGO 05-14-2005 07:51 PM

what about the Top Secret V8-TT G35C?

Methane 05-14-2005 09:04 PM

Your better of just dropping an Rb26 in there. You can make more power and it would probably be cheaper.

Since the FX45/35 uses the same chassis as the Z and G35, and comes stock with the VK45, I bet you could do a swap using almost all OEM parts, like mounts and wiring harnesses.

Top Secret did it with the G35 Coupe which has the exact same hood clearance as the Z. I'd say its probably a no brainer swap. Its just going to take someone with enough bucks to give it a shot.

Who is up for it?

Like Skrill said, does anyone know what the weight difference is between these engines?

kpiskin 05-15-2005 06:17 AM

I'm certain you'd have to beef up the front suspension to handle the extra weight. Has anyone considered what the weight distribution change would do to handling?

Yea..that extra 40lbs of the VK45 over the VQ35 is really going to take it's toll.... ;)

I wasn't certain, but I thought there was more of a weight difference.

FX uses struts up front instead of double wishbone to make room for the V8.

so what kind of fuel management the 4.5 swap will use?stock+reflash or the 4.5 ecu?

g356gear 05-15-2005 10:00 AM

Good luck switching over the wiring harness.....this ain't no Honda.

BriGuyMax 05-15-2005 10:10 AM

Guys...the 4.5 swap theory is just plain dumb. Why swap in an unsupported V8 that makes only a small amount more power in stock form than the VQ35...when the VQ35 has TONS of aftermarket support?

You'll spent more $$ getting the VK45 to 500hp than the VQ35 when it's all said and done. Motor swaps are for cars that have sh1t motors to begin with. The Z doesn't have a cr@p motor.

What he said....it's like swapping an Acura Vigor engine into a civic and trying to find a turbo kit for it :icon02:

Well its probably not as outlandish as people think it may be, some people are just looking to do something different to their cars instead of doing the same mods everyone else does i.e different powerbands, torque, weight distribution yada yada. Take a look at the real road going GT M3's- I believe they are 4.0 m5 powered. Different strokes for different folks, it just breaks down to money and who has the time and ability to do the custom work and wiring ( yeah its not a honda but with standalones anything can be wired).

But of course there will be the skeptics- like the people who would ruin Forsberg's threads on his sr20 swap (which is great a idea for dropping weight on a heavy car like the z). Some people are looking for different characteristics, and for those who wouldn't mind staying NA with great tq to begin with (ie auto-x'ers) this may be something fun and custom to run with in SM or once the market expands squeezing more power out of it and being powerful at near stock reliability.
