VLSD install in 05 base...
I searched around and couldn't find answers to these questions so here goes...
I'm installing a OEM VLSD in my 05 base tomorrow morning (the whole pumpkin including axle stubs), and I just wanted to know how easy/difficult this install is. To me it looks like you just unbolt the drive shaft and axles, take out the mounting bolts and unplug the wiring harnesses, and slap the new one in in reverse order. Please let me know if I'm wrong here.
Also, it is a used VLSD and has no oil in it. Where do I replace the oil and how much do I put in? The owner's manual doesnt state a capacity.
Thanks in advance for the help.

this shows you how to swap the oil. i dont think it will be that hard to do the work. let me ask you something. how much did you pay for the vlsd and axles stubs

thanks for the reply, very very helpful. I paid $540 from www.turbo-toys.com, that price includes shipping.
Doing same install on vlsd 05' base...is this the correct bearing?

It's not too tough of an install. Unbolt the driveshaft, the axles, sometimes removing the wheel speed sensors is easier than taking the connector off. Just get the new diff set in, pull the fill plug and fill away until it starts to spill out.
Just be sure to be easy with the diff mount bushing on the subframe when you are pulling the old one out and putting the new one in, they are filled with liquid and can quite literally explode if you manhandle it.

Awesome thanks for the info, I will let ya know how install goes

Except it's not. I did the swap in my '08 base 6MT earlier this year. Total cost was $400 for the 25k miles used VLSD, plus a few hours of labor in the driveway. My Z was a totally different car, as IMO the base car with an open diff is practically undriveable. I'd spin one wheel all the way up the entrance ramp to the interstate, and in the rain the car was a major handful. No manufacturer should sell a 300HP RWD car with an open diff.
True, I wanted a Quaife, as I have their diffs in 2 other cars (not Z's), but total cost would have easily been ~$1600 installed, and the VLSD is fine for spirited street driving. Unless you're a serious track driver with your Z, I'd say the VLSD upgrade is one of the best/most cost-effective mods you'll ever make.

^^ lol sorry guys, but terra is right...sure he may be a all out track guy speaking from track experience.......and yes for daily driving and some spirited stuff on a nice day sure the vlsd is fine.......
Buttt............when you really get in trouble, trust me that vlsd will do nothing for you.....
if there is the remote chance your gonna enthusiastically drive your Z at all, or even if you think youll make one event a year, save the money and buy a quaiffe or a clutch lsd.
for those that posted that you noticed an amazing difference after installing a vlsd, you need to really drive, not ride in a car, a z equipped with an aftermarket lsd....
Once again:
