I have some UOA's done on the RP 10W-30 and one done on the 5W-30. My thoughts are that the 10W-30 appears decent, but the 5W-30 is not a very good oil based on the one test result I have. There are some consistencies with the two RP weights. Both have high iron wear compared to the average of all the samples taken so far. They also have higher than average Aluminum wear. Both have thinned out from their virgin oil viscosity. The 10W-30 is just a tenth of a point off from being a 20 weight and the 5W-30 became a solid 20 weight. The 10W-30 held up better when you look at the average mileage on the oil, and based on the high average mileage, the thin viscosity of the 10W-30 isn't that big of an issue since the RP was a thin 30 weight oil to begin with.
The 10W-30 looked good for Chromium wear and Lead wear. I like the RP 10W-30 results in regards to Lead wear. Low Lead wear is my personal emphasis when looking at an oil's ability to protect, as it is an indication of how well it has protected the bearings. The Chromium, Aluminum, and Iron are my next emphasised wear indicators. Followed by Copper and the rest of the trace elements. In this regard, the RP 10W-30 looks great for lead and Chromium, but worse than average for everything else. So overall, RP 10W-30 is just an "ok" oil in my book and I see nothing specail or outstanding with it on the whole. There are other oils that have shown much better results with similiar mileage, but I wouldn't say the 10W-30 is a bad oil to use. I am still hesitant to recommend RP's 5W-30 until a decent average can be made from more than just the one sample sent to me.
The 10W-30 UOA's were not sent to me, but posted by a member in another thread. Screen name is The Professional, and the thread is:

edit: RP results added to the front comparison charts.

Not true, Amsoil's XL line is mainly group 3 based, ask AMSOIL yourself

Yes, yes, yes, this has already been covered. I did ask them myself, and they use a hydroisomerized base stock (G3+) with a PAO blend to maintain the incredibly good NOACK numbers that a regular G3 would never be able to do. Also used some alkylated napthalene (which is also a G5 base stock property for some oils) for shear resistance to support their extended OCI claims. What is your point? Their XL line might use hydrocracked crude, but as their marketing says every chance they get, they use a PAO oil. The XL line is just a blend using PAO with other base stocks. Are you just a big fan of XL oil or something? If so, post a UOA, you'll be the first.

Amsoil TSO 0W-30 posted on BITOG. Again, one of the best oils I've seen for an extended drain interval. Very low wear, especially when you look at how long it was used with no added oil. It has been added to the average results on the first page.

Most RECENT UOA (LEFT-most numbers):
Oil: Amsoil S2K 0W30
Oil Filter: Amsoil EaO12
Air Filter: Amsoil EaA in stock airbox
OCI: 7500 miles
Total Miles on vehicle: 37,500 miles
Time on oil: 4 1/2 months
Climate: Mostly below freezing, with last month or so starting to warm up outside (Toronto spring weather)

PREVIOUS UOA (RIGHT-most numbers):
Oil: Amsoil S2K 0W30
Oil Filter: Amsoil EaO12
Air Filter: stock Nissan paper element
OCI: 7500 miles
Total Miles on vehicle: 30,000 miles
Time on oil: 5 months
Climate: Some hot summer weather for the first 2 months, cooler temps for the next 2 months, and below freezing temps for the last month

UOA for Schaeffer's 5W-30 posted below. Added to the front page comparison chart.

Miles on Oil 4500 / Universal Averages

Sus Visc @ 210 F 53.9
Flashpoint 415
Fuel % < 0.5
Antifreeze % 0
Water % 0
Insolubles % 0.3

Edit: this oil is one of the best looking oils tested so far. I'm actually amazed at the lack of any Lead in the sample. Everything else is below the mean average of all the oil samples taken. Schaeffer's is a Group3 oil with extensive use of additive packages. A small amount of ZDDP and high Moly are the two that really come out in this test. For an explanation of additive packages see the first page of this thread, post #9. This combination works well, based on the tests.

Thanks to Gurgen for this one. A Mobil1 0W-40 UOA done a TT G35 Sedan. The oil was used for one trackday and went a full service interval without any oil added. The numbers look average to better than average, not stellar. The only exception would be the iron is high. This has been a common find in both the TT UOA's done so far. Where this oil really starts to shine is when you look and see the engine itself has less than 9k miles on it. The oil is still in the break-in stage. While iron is high, it is a good testament to this oil that the wear and viscosity numbers look just better than average for NA, daily-driven VQ35's and Gurgen is running a TT system on his. I expect his next few UOA's will continue to get even better when the engine finishes it's break-in. Most engines stop showing break-in wear around 15-20k miles. By comparison, look at how much better the 0W-40 performed than the 5W-30 in another TT engine that went only half the mileage.

Thanks for putting this together as it is helpful to compare the averages. Any chance EVERYONE could also provide a bit of information as to how the car was used (like the post above)? For instance:
daily driven only
daily driven + 2 autox
driven 1-2x/week + 3 track days

I would think 6 months & 3000 miles of casual daily driving would be easier on the oil than 3 month & 1000 miles of track and autox events.

I think it would be useful to at least have some sort of idea as to the conditions faced by the oil.

So what do you recommend Will? You know I've been using RP since I purchased my Z back in Oct 04.

Right now, Pennzoil Platinum or Schaeffers looks the best. M1 0W-40 and Amsoil 0W-30 look great too. When you're boosted, So far just M1 0W-40. But, I know one guy is using Eneos in his TT 350Z and will post a UOA on it, plus I'm hoping some of the Motul fanatics will post a UOA on what their using as well. Maybe you'll be the first. I think the new Motul 8100 X series formulations look good.

****UOA Comparison Chart updated on 6.1.07, and all new posts that cover an exhaustive list of additives, an explanation of oil viscosity, and a description of each type of base stock and oil group have been added to the first page. Check them out.****

I am thinking about switching to Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30. I have 23k miles on my car.

I have never used Pennzoil before... and I am kind of hesitant.

I use TSO 0w-30 myself, I'm not a fan of the XL line as its marketed toward the quick lube joints and only has a drain interval of 7500 miles. My point is AMSOIL's "claim to fame" has never included the XL line, all their marketing and tests are performed using their higher grade stuff which I stick to and recommend others doing as well. Its a decent oil, and better than alot of the other "synthetics" out there, but just isn't up to par with the rest of their line

Very true. I've been considering TSO in my own car, as it's been very impressive. So you go for extended OCI in yours? So far the TSO has been very encouraging to me for extended oil changes.

Its my first fill on the tso, my car only has 13k on it. Last batch was ASL/ASM 5w30/10w/30 mix which I ran for 7k after the break in with dino. I've got ~2500 mi on the tso and its running great. I'm going to push it to 10k and see what my results are, then see if I can go further

Awesome post!

While I still have 60 quarts of GC stock piled, my current fill is Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30. So far not too happy with it... burned about 1/2 quart which GC never did even under track conditions and engine seems louder at idle (lifter tap?).

Anybody else using Pennzoil Platinum that has bad experience... I need to change my oil soon and that was my choice...

I fell asleep after my last post... I posted my running UOW in my signature.

Our group switched to Amsoil 0W-30 in April, my next UOW should have a contrast against the prior 3 fluid swaps with RP 10w-30 at over 15k mi.
