AMSOIL Change it every 7500(I do 6000) and save money changing it early with cheaper oils. Highest viscosity break down IMO(and been proven but don't want to argue). This has been an argument here for a LONG TIME. Like I said IMO! I have it in three cars and no problems(knock on wood, haha). You can also do the extended XL which they just change the filter after 7500 (6000) then top it off until 15000(12000) and change everything all over again... Then again I have an auto and don't have the oil consumption problems most of you do.
I use the AMSOIL ATF in the transmission, and either Castrol SYNTEC 5-30 or Valvoline 5-30 full synthetic. 55K on the engine, and the oil is just darkening at 5000 mile intervals. So far so good.
AFAIK, Mobil 1, Penzoil, Castrol (non-European), and some others are all not "true" synthetic. But if you were to get "true" synthetic (Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline?) then it shouldn't matter when you get it changed ... just don't change it at 50 miles
. Synthetic oil reduces the wear on your engine, and since "breaking in" is basically a nice way of saying "wearing the engine so that it fits together perfectly", you probably shouldn't change to synthetic until you have reason to believe that the engine is done breaking in (simply because it'll take longer for the engine to be fully broken in if you switch to synthetic too early). I'm under the impression that the majority of break-in is done before the 1k mile mark ... so the 1st oil change could be synthetic without any repercussions.
I plan on switching to Amsoil @ 2k miles with a "hard" break-in. Then I'll change it once more @ 3k miles and then followup with a 6000 mile change interval until the end.

I have 3500 miles on my car and plan to do the royal purple change soon. I should be good. The only problem I have with Royal Purple is that I used it in my camaro(LS1) and it made my engine sound horrible. Anyone have any valvetrain noise after doing this?
