Synchro's failing
 

ok, so im my car to Forged Performance for my greddy tt install. so i went to nissan to have the techs give my car the once over before i finally void my warranty :icon38:. my tranny has been grinding going into 5th and 6th gear, so i wanted to know what they could do to rectify that. the good news is that they said it was covered, and that they would fix it. the bad news is they said it would take 7 to 10 days to fix, with no loaner. this is totally unacceptable because i need the car to get to work, and i cant go 2 weeks with out it. they basically said that they would need to first drop the tranny, find what was wrong for sure, see what was necessary to be replaced, order said parts, replace the tranny and then return the car to me. can anyone shed any light on if this is a reasonable amount of time to fix my car or not?

go to a different nissan dealer/service. When I had my tranny replaced under warranty... they didnt even bother to remove it and "drop the tranny, find what was wrong" they simply ordered a new one. I had to wait 4 days for the tranny to come. and 1 day to replace with the new one.

When they replaced my motor I was told it would take 7-10 days and no loaner car. Only the Infinity offers a loaner car cause it is thier luxury line.

all nissan dealerships don't give out loaners?!? So when the gtr comes out for 70k, its owner wont get a loaner if something goes wrong with the car?

After some hassle with a tech telling me I was just shifting too fast, and having the service manager of the GO Nissan I was at (who owns a Z as well, and had issues with his transmission too) drive it him self, they agreed to replace it as it was doing the same thing as yours.

I was in the same situation, I needed the car to get to work, it's my DD. They said they would have to take the tranny off, then look at it and see if nissan wanted them to rebuild it or replace it (even though I knew they would just replace it). They did replace it, but it spent 4 days in the shop. It does say in the warranty paper that nissan will cover a RENTAL car if the work is covered under warranty and you need another car to drive while the work is being done.

So I ended up going to a rental place that the dealership suggested and rented a car, which the dealership payed for under warranty except for gas. So you should be able to at least get a rental if they cant give you a loaner.

You only get a loaner if you have the extended gold warranty is what my dealer told me?? But I know with the regular warranty you dont get a loaner:(

Keep persisting. They should replace it, and order the trans, and then its a one-day job once the trans is in.

Did they say anything about the mods that are currently on the car? Or did you take them off and put stock back on?

I'm only 23, and when the tranny was replaced I was only 22... you should be fine getting a rental.

so when i call them up tomorrow, what should i say? "a bunch of guys on the internet said regardless of what happens, you're going to replace the transmission anyways, so you only need the car for 3 days". i have a feeling that they would respond to that by saying that the internet is wrong and they still need it for 10 days. :(

No, what you do is either take it to another dealership, or tell them that you cant do it unless they give you a rental car. If they say no to the rental, and you really cant spare the 10 days, take your business to another dealership, or figure a way out to go without your car for 10 days.

But seriously, many dealers are notorious for saying "no" first, or making it difficult, and then finally agreeing to do it. Their accountants probably tell them, that when they say "no", it gets rid of 67% of the warranty claims...LOL.

edit: i think im just going to call tomorrow, tell them they are being unreasonable, and that i know they are going to replace the gearbox regardless of what the issue is.

What exaclty is the grinding into gear?

Mines a stubon SOB and is notchy as hell. But i would never describe it as grinding.

I guess it depends upon the dealer. I have a 2003 Performance model that was grinding when shifting into 5th gear. I took the car to the dealer and a technician verified the problem with a short test drive. The dealer ordered a new transmission that was delivered in about 10 days. I dropped the car off in the morning and the dealer had the new transmission installed by that afternoon. The dealer did offer a loaner, but I had a ride that day and didn’t need it. I was only without a car for 5 or 6 hours. The new transmission was covered under the 50K drivetrain warranty. I didn’t pay anything (not even the “environmental fee,” “shop charge,” or the other stuff dealers charge to get a little extra.

The new transmission is just great and much better than the original. It’s less “notchy” and shifts more smoothly.

“Notchy” is a descriptive people use and understand differently. Owners driving the early 350Z’s describe the transmission as “notchy” meaning it requires precision when moving the shift lever to a different gear. The best way to describe this is the car doesn’t shift smoothly.

“Grinding” when shifting to a different gear is a problem with some 2003 and early 2004 Z’s. It’s a synchromesh failure. The grind usually happens when shifting into 3rd or 5th gear; and it’s very obvious. If your car does that, the cure is replacing the transmission.

Consider that any business has busy and slow times. You really need to consider that they have a workload, and that repair times will vary.

Make friends with a good service manager. Discuss your predicament. If they will not or cannot work with you, try a different dealer.

i thought i'd go ahead and update this thread since i just got some new info.

i talked to the service manager at my local Nissan dealership and i have a new gearbox in transit for me. if everything goes to plan, by the end of next week i should be all fixed up and ready for my trip to Forged Performance. all in all im pretty happy with how this has worked out.
