Hollllly Shi*!!!!

so apparently an aftermarket cold air intake + a puddle of water = death of a 12000 dollar motor. so i got a call from my mom saying that the cars making funny noises going the whole way to red line and not doing anything the first thing i told her is shut the damn car off NOW!! so she does and leaves it on the Courtney cambel causeway our tow truck came an took it to lokey Nissan they tell me basically I'm fuc*ed and now i have to pay 12000 for a new motor :(

*UPDATE* i just talked to my insurance to take a blind shot at trying to get the price lower and they said according to the claim i can claim it as comprehensive coverage for a road hazard.

*UPDATE*GOD DAMNIT mom just said we donot have comp FUC* ME

yeah that sucks dude. One of the risks of having a CAI. My first question is how much water was there for you to drive over to cause a hydrolock? Hope you didn't try to drive through some flood area...lol.

RandomHer0 07-17-2008 08:09 AM

Mom owes you a motor. 12K for a new motor? Build one yourself.

i wasn't driving the car:( my mom was so i didn't even get to destroy the motor i have to replace:icon27:

LAKERSFAN 07-17-2008 08:12 AM

ouch. good luck with the repairs man. sorry to hear.

Paul350Z 07-17-2008 08:13 AM

Water doesn't compress like air does. :(

When I take my other Nissan swimming we're very aware and careful of that fact. If you do ingest water shut down the motor as fast as you can and pull the spark plugs.

$12,000 sounds a bunch for a motor, can you find one from a wreck or just rebuild the current one?

would take a pretty deep puddle to hydrolock your car. I would get a second opinion, i'm not sure about Lokey but i know Autoway over by me are crooks.

I'm not saying your car isn't focked i'm just saying i would drain the fluids myself to make sure.

You should go to Performance Factory and get everything done.

It'll be cheaper to get a built motor...

Lokey said that the piston got fkd up and the cylinder wall is done for:medic:

Give PF a call and see if they can hook you up with a OEM motor and let them do it. I would have PF look at the car first and see what JT says about the motor....he'll give it to you straight unlike the stealerships

terrycs 07-17-2008 11:25 AM

I doubt it was your CAI sucking up water. If the puddle were that deep, the interior of you car would be flooded and in pretty bad shape. Hydrolocking would seize the motor and there would be no "funny sounds to redline".

Get your mom to 'fess up ... she was street racing and blew a shift huh?!:icon44:

bboypuertoroc 07-17-2008 11:27 AM

Must've been one hell of a puddle.

$12k can easily get you a built engine.

deezz 07-17-2008 11:30 AM

No way the motor is $12K. I had mine replaced, under warranty, and the invoice stated 9K for the motor. I would imagine you could get a rebuilt one for 4-5K.
Either way, Good Luck.

Thermal1 07-17-2008 11:38 AM

god almighty, please don't hand 12k to a dealership to get a stock motor. Get a 2nd opinion and a used motor or a built motor.

Everyone throw away your CAIs they dont give you power anyway =P

All because you needed an intake that makes no more power than a short ram. Oh well.

Blwn_By_Twins 07-17-2008 11:44 AM

What intake were you running? Something sounds fishy.

warmmilk 07-17-2008 11:47 AM

if it still runs, chances are you dont need a new engine. funny noise can be bad sparkplugs. try changing those, along with a couple of oil change / flushes (change the oil, idle for a few mins, change the oil again) to get as much water our as you can.

however, if your engine really is proper f***ed (snatch reference), then rebuilding it with PF would be cheaper, even if you just had them fix it back to stock specs...

Blu_Blur 07-17-2008 12:20 PM

CAI's aren't even worth it in the Z in the first place since most of them are blocked behind the air damn that routed the air up for the original air box.

Just go with a JWT air intake. Short rams are better than CAI's for the Z.
