VQ35, how bulletproof is the block?

Does anyone know how strong is this engine block and what kind of horsepower is it capable of? Any chance in the future a tuner can succesfully maintain... ohh lets say 1000+ hp w/o destroying the engine block?

LaoSiFu 07-26-2003 04:29 PM

1000HP is a lot of power for our car. I don't think we can even surpass 600HP. Don't flame me but just correct me if I'am wrong.

MrForgetable 07-26-2003 05:11 PM

Of course it can run 1000 + hp!!

For a few seconds :p

There is word that Top Secret blew 2 or more engines while prototyping a turbokit; I'm not sure how credible the word is though.

MATIX 07-26-2003 08:22 PM

Top Secret snapped the rods on those motors, as have many other tuners in Japan using FI. The rods are the weak point on the motor...let's put it this way, the rods only cost $35 bucks a piece to replace from Nissan, so they're not exactly top notch =/

I don't know. I think a .357 can still crack a VQ block. Bulletproof is a lot to ask for these days.

Seriously, only time will tell on this issue. I hear stories of Maxima's running good HP numbers on stock blocks, but Z owners will have to change out the rods to push the envelope as that is the real limiting factor right now.

Performance nissan seems to be running with consistant progressive nitrous shots of 225 and has no problems reported.

Do the Maxima's VQ Engine use the same amount of Aluminum as our engine does?

VQ35DES 07-27-2003 03:18 PM

darton sleeves?

kzshin 07-28-2003 12:00 AM

I think it's strong till 400 whp. After all it's not an RB26DETT

I've seen stock RB26's shoot a rod through the block

ihatethatbobbarker 07-28-2003 12:24 AM

stock i wouldnt suggest pushing it much past 400

Jason 07-28-2003 02:00 PM

So, I take it that the stock rods are cast?

Enron Exec 07-28-2003 07:27 PM

This might be too early to ask but here goes...

Can you guys list the weak parts in the engine from the weakest to the strongest and at about how many consistent rwhp do you think the part will fail.

kvjacobz 07-29-2003 03:46 PM

If you knew the size of the engine parts and what material each part was made of, a mechanical engineer could answer your question.

It would be a pain in the *** though.

MardiGrasMax 08-02-2003 06:46 PM

428 at the wheels on a stock VQ30 right here! Rods are same design as the VQ35. 428 was all I had the guts to push.

I should have a built VQ35 bottom end running by spring. I sent Kyle @ SGP the parts from a stock VQ35, rods, pistons, head and main bolts to get the custom parts prototyped. Pistons and rods are done, just waiting on head and main studs. Looking to max out some 555cc injectors and a small shot of nitrous, perhaps 600-700bhp. My question is will the cylinder walls hold together?

God help my trans ;)

Yeah, it would be a pain in the ***. Doesn't work that well either.

The only way to know for sure is to repair one part at a time.

Parts that are usually weak are valve, seal, and rods.

racingdynamcs 08-03-2003 07:09 AM

VQ35de are strong but why would u need 1000HP for???

i think the rods/pistons/ valves and springs in our engine would not take the 1000hp as it sits stock but replacing them with ...... titanium rods/forged aluminum pistons/titanium valves and springs(coated w/ ceramic) it should be ready for 1000hp with a turbo...replacing exhaust manifold is a given...

i KNOW the rods in our engine would not take 1000hp as it sits stock.

i see me eating lots of rice and water in the near future to pay for all this engine modding ;)
