Engine overheating and leaking coolant*** help~

I've looked around many threads and people were saying bleeding coolant and there might be some air in it. or change your thermostats. etc etc..

here is the story

I brought my car back from my bodyshop today and when I was about to park, i noticed heat level for the engine was high. So i parked my car and open my hood and the engine sure was overheating. And coolant started leaking. (near radiator, front passenger side) I tried turning on heater and it did not work.

what could be the problem?

thanks in advance

i posted this in "repair" section as well but i dont think many people go there so i just posted up here. sorry but i had to re post :(

Check to see if your fan is turning on. In the accident did they have to repair anything up front?

samjcg 10-02-2008 10:34 PM

fan is turning on.. yea front was damaged but not so much.. only hood, front bumper and basically hood latch and stuff.. they might have replaced radiator though.

Good possibility the body shop either replaced or at least drained your
radiator and refilled. If either was the case, then air is in the cooling system and is
difficult to get out. With air you WILL have over heating and puking coolant.
Do a search for over heating and you should find excellent advice on bleeding
it. It is not difficult, but you have to know what you need to do. And be SURE your
heater is on full blast to get the air out of the heater core. I will keep watching
this post to see how you are coming along. Good luck! Also, check coolant level
when cold as air will rise to radiator then and also make sure your reservoir is
at the level is should be as when the car cools, it pulls the coolant back into the engine.

where can i get exact direction to bleed the system? i been looking around and they are not that great :(

06Track 10-03-2008 08:52 AM

Here is a link to read..there are many but this one is pretty simple.

https://my350z.com/forum/engine-driv...nt-change.html

Be sure to NOT open the green cap one on the pass side. There is another one
close to it that will bleed the air. I think you will see it. I will keep watching to see how you get
along. Good luck!!

You can download the service manual here: http://www.*********.com/zwiki/Service_Guide
When you get it, the cooling system is the letters co.pdf.

Here is the link for service manual

OK..one more time...after the www. put ********* where the **** are.

It wont let me copy it. Sorry

LOL.. thanks for the help. i will try it out :)

samjcg 10-03-2008 10:40 AM

i think i know what i should do except where the bleed cap is..
I thought it was the green cap this whole time... :(

is it this one?

06Track 10-03-2008 10:51 AM

Yes, that is it... and NOT the green one. Good luck

I've owned 6 Nissans, so far, & it's the 1st time I hear of bleeding a coolant system. Ne-
ver've done it before: Is the Zed unique on this issue?

samjcg 10-03-2008 03:40 PM

ok i tried it and i think i have failed...

my body shop guy told me to turn on the car.. leave it at idle and fill the radiator with coolant, which i did and i drove it around for awhile and and here goes the engine overheating... I dont think there is leak though... coolant sure was leaking yesterday but today for some reason it is not leaking. I am so confused now..

my heaters dont blow hot air and engine just overheating...

my bodyshop was kind enough to send the tow truck and get it fixed tomorrow. if everything works out fine then i will recommend you guys to this bodyshop.. :)

btw, i couldn't turn the bleed cap??

The leaking was probably coolant coming out of the overflow bottle vent, as it would explain the placement of the "leak" and why it has stopped.

My advice to you is to buy a spill free funnel, and continue to bleed. Your problem is air in the lines, I guarantee it 100%.

Here are cliff notes of how to bleed coolant in the Z:

1. Install spill free funnel.
2. Fill funnel with coolant.
3. Start car
4. Rev car to ~3k rpms, hold for 10 second, return to idle. Repeat about 3 times.
5. Open bleed valve, let air escape, close bleed valve when coolant starts to run out.
6. Repeat step 4
7. Repeat step 5
8. Repeat step 4
9. Repeat step 5

....On and on we go until all air is purged.

Some advanced tricks:

1. Park car so that the front end is elevated higher, or jack up front end. This helps air escape easier.
2. Squeeze the upper coolant hose repeatedly, you will see air bubbles coming up thru the spill free funnel. Rev engine as described above, and repeat upper radiator hose squeezing. Continue until no air comes up into the funnel.
3. Drive the car around for a while. Allow car to cool all the way down. Now repeat this whole process - if you get no more air you are done. If you get air, you need to keep bleeding.

Bleeding all the air out of the coolant in this car is a bigger b!tch then michelle obama. But you just have to stick with it. I dont even mess with the coolant bleeder valve personally, I find the upper radiator hose squeezing method to be much faster.

at stage 4.

i have to rev car up to 3k rpm and hold at 3k rpm for 10 sec? or rev up to 3k rpm for 10 sec?

SpoilsofWar 10-03-2008 05:40 PM

Hold at 3k rpm for 10 seconds. This is to help circulate the coolant (and hopefully any air bubbles) thru the cooling system.

i cannot open bleed valve... it seems like it will snap off... is it just tight or wat? i used the screw driver as well..
